Appendix Letter 10

Through charity and kindness — the external wisdoms are subdued — and one merits to the conceptions of G-dliness.

Through charity — one merits to subdue the body before the soul — the matter before the form — the foolishness before the intellect. And one goes out from darkness to light — from death to life — from beast to human being. And the external wisdoms — and all the wisdoms of vanity and falsehood — are nullified before the wisdom of the Torah — which is the true wisdom. And the forgetfulness is nullified — and one merits to memory. And the judgment and the darkness are nullified. And kindnesses are drawn in the world. The charity that one gives to Torah scholars is very great and precious — and no transgression is able to extinguish it. Charity from the thoughts of licentiousness — in the aspect of the sitra d'mussa (the side of death). Charity is the repair for the blemish of the Bris.

Charity to the deserving poor is a very great repair for the blemish of the Bris. Charity saves from transgressions. Through charity — daas is drawn down. One must have abundant compassion — to perform kindness. And through this — all the thirteen attributes of mercy are aroused from above. And through this — the destroyers that were created through his sins — are subdued and nullified. For the Holy Blessed One forgives his sins through this. And removes them — one by one — through charity to true Tzadikim and the deserving poor. Through this converts and ba'alei teshuvah are made. And through this the intellect is completed. And one merits to see the light of the Tzadik. And through this one merits to fear and to love.

Through charity — the minds are elevated.
