What Moshe called the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuven: ""a breed of sinful men"" [Numbers 32:14] — and Onkelos translated: ""disciples of wicked men"" — see the main text. [Through a teacher withholding halachah from his student — which is like robbing him of his ancestral inheritance — as our Sages of blessed memory said [Sanhedrin 91b] — he causes his student also to wish to rob Israel of their ancestral inheritance. And likewise when a student condemns the multitude — presumably his teacher is the same. See the chapter "Lifnay Eidayhem" [Avodah Zarah]: ""a student of Rabbi Akiva — you are a highwayman."" From this is understood what our Sages of blessed memory said: a student who killed a person — his teacher is exiled with him — for presumably there is also in his teacher the matter of killing — as with robbery — which is also the matter of killing — as our Sages of blessed memory said: ""it is as if he takes his soul.""]
