תּוֹרָה קכח יֵשׁ אֲנָשִׁים כְּשֵׁרִים קְצָת, וּמֵחֲמַת שֶׁנּוֹגֵעַ יִרְאַת ה' בְּלִבּוֹ מַשְׁפִּיל עֵינָיו קְצָת וְאֵינוֹ מִסְתַּכֵּל בְּנָשִׁים, וְאַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן הוּא גּוֹנֵב אֶת הָעַיִן כִּלְאַחַר יָד וּמִסְתַּכֵּל מִן הַצַּד, וְזֶה בְּחִינַת מַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ חֲכָמֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה לְעִנְיַן הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע דַּעֲבֵרָה: 'כַּחְלִינְהוּ לְעֵינֵהּ' (יוֹמָא ס"ט), שֶׁמְּסַמֵּא עֵינֵי הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁמּוֹנֵעַ עַצְמוֹ מִלְּהִסְתַּכֵּל, וְאַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן נִשְׁאָר הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע כִּי מִסְתַּכֵּל מִן הַצַּד כִּלְאַחַר יָד:
There are somewhat worthy people — and since the fear of Hashem touches his heart slightly — he lowers his eyes somewhat and does not look at women. Even so he steals a glance sideways and looks from the side. And this is the aspect of what our Sages of blessed memory said concerning the evil inclination of transgression: ""he blinds its eyes"" [Yoma 69b] — that one blinds the eyes of the evil inclination through preventing oneself from looking. Yet even so the evil inclination remains — for it looks sideways from the side.
