תּוֹרָה קעה עִקַּר מַעֲלַת הַבְּכִיָּה הִיא כְּשֶׁהִיא מֵחֲמַת שִׂמְחָה וְחֶדְוָה, וַאֲפִלּוּ הַחֲרָטָה טוֹב מְאֹד שֶׁתִּהְיֶה מֵחֲמַת שִׂמְחָה, שֶׁמֵּרֹב שִׂמְחָתוֹ בְּהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, יִתְחָרֵט וְיִתְגַּעְגֵּעַ מְאֹד עַל שֶׁמָּרַד נֶגְדּוֹ, וְיִתְעוֹרֵר לוֹ בְּכִיָּה מֵחֲמַת הַשִּׂמְחָה:

The primary virtue of weeping is when it comes from joy and gladness. And even regret is very good when it comes from joy — that from the great joy in Hashem Yisborach — one regrets and greatly longs over having rebelled against Him — and a weeping awakens in one from the joy.
