תּוֹרָה קפא א. כְּשֶׁמִּתְקַשְּׁרִים יַחַד אֵיזֶה אֲנָשִׁים וְחוֹלְקִים עַל אִישׁ אֶחָד, אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁהוּא אָדָם חָשׁוּב יוֹתֵר מֵהֶם, עִם כָּל זֶה יְכוֹלִין לְהַפִּילוֹ, רַק שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיוּ רְשָׁעִים, כִּי קֶשֶׁר רְשָׁעִים אֵינוֹ מִן הַמִּנְיָן, אֲבָל אִם אֵינָם רְשָׁעִים, אָז יְכוֹלִין לְהַפִּיל מִי שֶׁחוֹלְקִין עָלָיו עַל־יְדֵי הַקֶּשֶׁר, אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד לְבַדּוֹ נָמוּךְ מִמֶּנּוּ, אִם לֹא שֶׁזֶּה שֶׁחוֹלְקִין עָלָיו הוּא גָּדוֹל בְּמַעֲלָה מְאֹד, אָז אַדְּרַבָּא הֵם נִתְבַּטְּלִים לְפָנָיו, וּכְשֶׁמַּפִּילִין אֵיזֶה אָדָם, עִקַּר הַנְּפִילָה שֶׁנּוֹפֵל לְתַאֲוַת נִאוּף רַחֲמָנָא לִצְלָן: ב. כָּל הַדְּבָרִים שֶׁדּוֹבְרִים עַל הַצַּדִּיק הָאֱמֶת וְעַל אֲנָשָׁיו, הֵם טוֹבוֹת גְּדוֹלוֹת מְאֹד בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וְרוּחָנִיּוּת, וְהֵן הֵן הַמַּצִּיבִין אוֹתָם:
When some people band together and dispute against one person — even though he is more distinguished than they — even so they can bring him down. Only they must not be wicked people. For a conspiracy of the wicked does not count. But if they are not wicked — then they can bring down whoever they dispute against through the conspiracy. Even though each one individually is lower than him. Unless the one they dispute against is very great in level — then on the contrary they are nullified before him. And when someone is brought down — the primary fall is into the desire for immorality — G-d have mercy. All the matters spoken about the true Tzadik and his people — they are great benefits in physicality and spirituality. And these are what establish them.
