א. עִקַּר הַתַּכְלִית הוּא רַק לַעֲבֹד הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְלֵילֵךְ בִּדְרָכָיו לִשְׁמוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, כְּדֵי לִזְכּוֹת לְהַכִּיר אוֹתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁזֶּהוּ רְצוֹנוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ. כִּי מִי שֶׁעוֹבֵד בִּשְׁבִיל עוֹלָם הַבָּא זֶהוּ נִקְרָא מִלּוּי בֶּטֶן, שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְמַלֵּא בִּטְנוֹ בָּעוֹלָם הַבָּא. אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁבֶּאֱמֶת בְּוַדַּאי טוֹב יוֹתֵר וְיוֹתֵר לַעֲבֹד הַשֵּׁם אֲפִלּוּ בִּשְׁבִיל עוֹלָם הַבָּא מִלִּרְדֹּף אַחַר הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, וְגַם זֶה שֶׁעוֹבֵד הַשֵּׁם אֲפִלּוּ בִּשְׁבִיל עוֹלָם הַבָּא, בְּוַדַּאי הוּא חָכָם יוֹתֵר מִזֶּה שֶׁמִּתְיַגֵּעַ כָּל יָמָיו בִּשְׁבִיל עוֹלָם הַזֶּה, כִּי זֶה בּוֹחֵר לְעַצְמוֹ עוֹלָם הַקַּיָּם לָעַד, אַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן עִקַּר הַתַּכְלִית בִּשְׁלֵמוּת הוּא רַק לַעֲבֹד אוֹתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ כְּדֵי לִזְכּוֹת לְהַכִּיר אוֹתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁזֶּהוּ רְצוֹנוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ:
Sometimes the light of the Tzadik is so very very great — that it is impossible for the smaller one to receive the Tzadik's great light in his place — because of the excess of light. Therefore the great one is compelled to lower and humble oneself before the small one and go to him — so that through this the light decreases somewhat — so that the small one can receive it. And this is the aspect of: "in the place of His greatness — there we find His humility."
ב. כְּשֶׁאֵין הָאָדָם מְקַדֵּשׁ עַצְמוֹ, וְרוֹדֵף אַחַר תַּאֲווֹת וּמוֹתָרוֹת לֶאֱסֹף מָמוֹן, וּמְבַלֶּה יָמָיו לְהַשְׁאִיר יְרֻשָּׁה לְבָנָיו, זֶה הַמָּמוֹן שֶׁמַּשְׁאִיר לְבָנָיו הוּא כְּמוֹ מִי שֶׁמְּלַכְלֵךְ עַצְמוֹ בְּטִנּוּף, וְלוֹקֵחַ טִנּוּף וּמְכַסֶּה עַל הַטִּנּוּף, כַּמְבֹאָר בִּפְנִים עַיֵּן שָׁם. וַאֲפִלּוּ מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְהַשְׁאִיר זְכוּתוֹ לְבָנָיו, גַּם זֶה אֵינוֹ תַּכְלִית הַשְּׁלֵמוּת. וְהַצַּדִּיקִים הַשְּׁלֵמִים אֵין בּוֹחֲרִים בְּכָל זֶה כְּלָל, רַק לְמַלְּאוֹת רְצוֹנוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ:
The primary matter the Tzadik needs to illuminate in his students is to magnify their minds and to bring them out of constricted minds [moachin d'katnus] to expanded minds [moachin d'gadlus]. And sometimes he illuminates in them through the illumination of the face — and consolations with which he consoles them — and illuminates to them with a smiling face. And sometimes they cannot receive his light through this. And then he must illuminate in them through afflictions — that he must afflict and shame them in order to nullify them — so that they can receive his light. In the aspect of: ""a log that does not ignite — one strikes it."" What the Tzadik is compelled sometimes to lower and nullify himself slightly from his greatness — so the small one can receive as above — all this is only temporarily. And afterwards he returns to his level. But through this he corrects and elevates the small one entirely. And there are many distinctions in the matter of the smallness and submission of the great one before the small one — in order to receive his light. For sometimes it is only in a general movement. And sometimes one must go and travel to him. And everything according to the matter.
