Kitzur Likutay Moharan
The primary purpose is only to serve Hashem Yisborach and walk in His ways — for His Name's sake, may He be blessed — in order to merit to know Him, may He be blessed. Which is His will, may He be blessed. For one who serves for the sake of the World to Come — this is called filling one's belly — for one wishes to fill one's belly in the World to Come. Even though in truth certainly it is much better and better to serve Hashem even for the World to Come — than to pursue this world — G-d forbid. And also one who serves Hashem even for the World to Come — is certainly wiser than one who toils all one's days for this world — for one chooses for oneself an eternal enduring world. Even so — the primary purpose in completeness is only to serve Him, may He be blessed — in order to merit to know Him, may He be blessed — which is His will, may He be blessed. When a person does not sanctify oneself — and pursues desires and superfluous things [moasoroas] to gather money — and spends one's days to leave an inheritance for one's children — this money one leaves to one's children is like one who soils oneself in filth and takes filth and covers the filth — as is explained in the main text — see there. And even one who wishes to leave one's merit to one's children — this too is not the ultimate purpose. And the complete Tzadikim do not choose any of this at all — only to fulfil His will, may He be blessed.
