In the breaking of the earthenware vessel at the time of the betrothal — one is hinted to and reminded that there is Gehinnom. So that one will remember this and not be swept after one's desire. And sanctify oneself in one's union as is proper. Also one is hinted that if one has a bad wife — one should not be faithless to her and not divorce her. For through her — one does not see the face of Gehinnom. As our Sages of blessed memory said [Eruvin 41b]. For one must be very careful not to divorce one's wife.
