עִקַּר בְּרִיאַת הָאָדָם וִירִידָתוֹ לָעוֹלָם הַגַּשְׁמִי הַזֶּה הַמָּלֵא קְלִפּוֹת וְהַסָּתוֹת וְכוּ הוּא כְּדֵי שֶׁיּוּכַל לְהוֹצִיא הַחֲסָדִים הַנֶּעְלָמִים מְאד מֵהֶעְלֵם אֶל הַגִּלּוּי שֶׁזֶּה עִקַּר גְּדֻלָּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, כִּי מִדַּת הַחֶסֶד נִקְרָא גְּדוֹלָה וְכָל מַה שֶּׁמּוֹצִיאִין חַסְדּוֹ מֵהֶעְלֵם אֶל הַגִּלּוּי נִתְגַּלֶּה גְּדֻלָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ יוֹתֵר. וְזֶה בְּעַצְמוֹ גַּם כֵּן הָעִנְיָן שֶׁל בְּחִינַת יְרִידָה תַּכְלִית הָעֲלִיָּה, כִּי עַל יְדֵי שֶׁמְּחַזֵּק עַצְמוֹ גַּם בְּעֵת הַיְרִידָה עַל יְדֵי הָאֱמוּנָה בְּעצֶם חֲסָדָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ עַד אֵין קֵץ וְתַכְלִית, עַל יְדֵי זֶה מוֹצִיא הַחֲסָדִים הַנֶּעְלָמִים אֶל הַגִּלּוּי שֶׁזֶּה עִקַּר גְּדֻלָּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה זוֹכֶה לַעֲלוֹת בַּעֲלִיָּה גְּדוֹלָה וּלְהַשִּׂיג הַשָּׂגָה יְתֵרָה בִּגְדֻלָּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ. וְזֶה גַּם כֵּן בְּחִינַת בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁבַּעֲלֵי תְּשׁוּבָה עוֹמְדִים אֵין צַדִּיקִים גְּמוּרִים יְכוֹלִים לַעֲמד, כִּי עַל יְדֵיהֶם נִתְגַּלֶּה גְּדֻלַּת חַסְדּוֹ וְטוּבוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּיוֹתֵר (שָׁם אוֹת ט"ו)
The essential purpose of the creation of man and his descent into this coarse physical world, full of k'lipos and incitements etc., is in order to draw forth the very hidden kindnesses from concealment into revelation — this is the essential manifestation of His greatness. For the attribute of kindness is called gedolah [greatness] — and the more one draws forth His kindness from concealment to revelation, the more His greatness is revealed. And this itself is also the matter of descent being the ultimate ascent — for through strengthening oneself even at the time of descent through faith in the very essence of His kindnesses without end, one thereby draws forth the hidden kindnesses into revelation, which is the essential manifestation of His greatness. And through this one merits a great ascent and a heightened comprehension of His greatness...
