משיבת נפש - Meshivas Nefesh
כָּל אֶחָד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁרוֹצֶה לָחוּס עַל נַפְשׁוֹ וְלָצֵאת מִזֻּהֲמָתוֹ וּלְהִתְקָרֵב לְצַדִּיקֵי אֱמֶת וְכַוָּנָתוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת לָשׁוּב לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, צָרִיךְ לֵידַע, שֶׁבְּהֶכְרֵחַ שֶׁיַּעַבְרוּ עָלָיו כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה מִשְׁבָּרִים וְגַלֵּי הַיָּם וּבְחִינוֹת וְנִסְיוֹנוֹת וְצֵרוּפִים וְאִם לא יַנִּיחַ אֶת מְקוֹמוֹ בְּכָל מַה שֶּׁיַּעֲבר עָלָיו בְּוַדַּאי יִזְכֶּה לְאַחֲרִית טוֹב לָנֶצַח. וּלְכָל זֶה מְקַבְּלִין כּחַ רַק מֵהַצַּדִּיק הָאֱמֶת בְּחִינַת משֶׁה שֶׁהוּא עוֹשֶׂה כַּמָּה תַּחְבּוּלוֹת בְּחָכְמָה נִפְלָאָה כְּדֵי לְהַחֲיוֹת וּלְקַיֵּם אֶת כָּל הַנְּפָשׁוֹת הַחֲפֵצִים לְהִתְקָרֵב לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ. שֶׁזֶּה בְּחִינַת מַה שֶּׁהַצַּדִּיק מְבַטֵּל אֶת עַצְמוֹ לִפְעָמִים מֵהַשָּׂגָתוֹ וּמִדְּבֵקוּתוֹ בִּכְדֵי לְהַחֲיוֹת וּלְחַזֵּק אֶת כָּל הָאֲנָשִׁים הַפְּשׁוּטִים הַבְּטֵלִים מִן הַתּוֹרָה וְכֵן אֶת הַלּוֹמְדִים בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁצְּרִיכִין לְבַטֵּל אֶת עַצְמָם. כִּי בְהֶכְרֵחַ צְרִיכִין לְבַטֵּל אֶת עַצְמָם לִפְעָמִים, כִּי הָעֲבוֹדָה צְרִיכָה לִהְיוֹת בִּבְחִינַת רָצוֹא וָשׁוֹב עַיִל וְנָפִיק, שֶׁזֶּה בְּחִינַת כָּל הָעֲלִיּוֹת וִירִידוֹת שֶׁצְּרִיכִין לַעֲבר עַל כָּל אֶחָד. וְזֶה בְּחִינַת הַהַפְסָקוֹת שֶׁבֵּין פָּרָשָׁה לְפָרָשָׁה שֶׁבַּתּוֹרָה שֶׁזֶּה בְּחִינַת הַבִּטּוּל שֶׁמְּבַטֵּל עַצְמוֹ הַצַּדִּיק בְּכָל פַּעַם וּמַפְסִיק עַצְמוֹ מֵעֲבוֹדָתוֹ, בִּכְדֵי לְהַחֲיוֹת וּלְחַזֵּק אֶת כָּל בְּחִינַת הַבְּטֵלִים הַנַּ"ל. וְזֶה מְרֻמָּז בְּדִבְרֵי רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה, מֶה הָיוּ הַפְסָקוֹת מְשַׁמְּשׁוֹת לִתֵּן רֶוַח לְמשֶׁה וְכוּ קַל וָחֹמֶר לְהֶדְיוֹט הַלָּמֵד מִן הַהֶדְיוֹט וְכוּ. כִּי עִקַּר כָּל הַהֶדְיוֹטוֹת לְחַזֵּק אֶת עַצְמָם בְּעֵת בִּטּוּלָם וִירִידָתָן הוּא רַק עַל יְדֵי הַפְסָקוֹת הַנַּ"ל. וְעַל יְדֵי שֶׁמְּחַזְּקִין אֶת עַצְמָם בְּכָל מַה שֶּׁעוֹבֵר עֲלֵיהֶם עַל יְדֵי זֶה מְבָרְרִין בְּחִינַת עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע שֶׁמִּשָּׁם כּל הַנִּסְיוֹנוֹת שֶׁל הָאָדָם. וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה זוֹכִין לְתִקּוּן הַדַּעַת וְעַל יְדֵי זֶה מִמֵּילָא נִתְתַּקְּנִין כָּל הַשְּׁלשָׁה מחִין וְזוֹכִין לֶאֱמוּנַת חִדּוּשׁ הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, וְחִדּוּשׁ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁלֶּעָתִיד (שָׁם אוֹת ל"ח)
Most of a person's falls come because he has already been aroused several times toward Hashem and fallen from it. But in truth it is the opposite — for even one who has sinned all his days and was not aroused to teshuvah at all: if he returns at the end, all is forgiven him, as our Sages of blessed memory said. All the more so one who has been aroused several times and returned and distanced — and so it happened several times. Certainly he has hope, and certainly it is easier for him to return to Hashem in truth, for leis re'uta tava d'is'tabed. (ibid., Halacha 7, Ois 7) And it is a great virtue when a person still has an evil inclination, for then he can serve Him, may He be blessed, with the evil inclination specifically — namely, to prevail from within the fervor of the evil inclination and draw from it into some service of His, may He be blessed. And if a person has no evil inclination, his service counts for nothing at all. And for this reason Hashem, may He be blessed, allows the evil inclination to spread so much over a person — and especially over one who truly desires to draw close to Him. Even though through its spreading and provoking it brings the person to various sins and great blemishes — even so, all of it is worthwhile before Him for the sake of the good movement whereby, in the very force of the evil inclination's power, a person strengthens against it and flees from it. This is more precious before Him, may He be blessed, than if he had served Him a thousand years without any evil inclination. For all worlds were created only for the sake of the human being whose entire greatness and importance comes from the fact that he has such an evil inclination and yet strengthens against it. Therefore, the more it spreads and provokes — so too every small movement by which he strengthens against it is more precious before Him, may He be blessed. And Hashem, may He be blessed, Himself helps him with this, as it is said: "Hashem will not leave him in his hand" [Psalms 37:33]. (ibid.)
