משיבת נפש - Meshivas Nefesh
הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע נוֹקֵשׁ בְּכָל פַּעַם וּמְעוֹרְרוֹ לְמַה שֶּׁמְּעוֹרְרוֹ וְאַף אִם אֵין אָדָם שׁוֹמֵעַ לוֹ וּפוֹנֶה ערֶף מִמֶּנּוּ אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הוּא נוֹקֵשׁ בּוֹ עוֹד פַּעַם שֵׁנִי וּשְׁלִישִׁי וּרְבִיעִי וְיוֹתֵר. אֲבָל אִם הָאָדָם הוּא חָזָק בְּדַעְתּוֹ וְעַקְשָׁן נֶגֶד הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע וְאֵינוֹ פּוֹנֶה אֵלָיו כְּלָל, אֲזַי הַיֵּצֶר הָרָע מִסְתַּלֵּק וְהוֹלֵךְ לוֹ. וְכֵן בַּתְּפִלָּה בְּעִנְיַן הַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת הַבָּאִים לְבַלְבְּלוֹ הוּא מַמָּשׁ כַּנַּ"ל, שֶׁהַמַּחֲשָׁבָה בָּאָה כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים פַּעַם אַחַר פַּעַם לְבַלְבְּלוֹ, וְצָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת חָזָק לִבְלִי לְהִסְתַּכֵּל עָלֶיהָ כְּלָל בְּשׁוּם אפֶן וְעַיֵּן בִּמְקוֹמוֹת אֲחֵרִים מִזֶּה
The evil inclination knocks every time and arouses one to what it arouses — and even if a person does not listen and turns his back on it, even so it knocks again a second and third and fourth time and more. But if a person is strong in his resolve and stubborn against the evil inclination and pays no attention to it at all, the evil inclination then withdraws and departs. And so too in prayer, regarding the thoughts that come to confuse him — it is exactly as above: the thought comes many times one after another to confuse him, and one must be strong not to look at it at all in any way.
