And the essential thing — pray to Hashem as much as you can. And the essential thing: only hope and hope in G‑d, blessed be He — in the merit of Rabbainu the Holy one, who said: "What do you have to worry about — since I go before you?" And who said: "Rely on my strength!" And the essential thing — be in joy: only joy. And truly, truly — you must be in very great joy without measure: that after such obstacles, and such illness, G‑d forbid — you merited to be at the holy Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur at the holy and awesome Tzion of the Rashbi, of blessed memory — whom no Tzadik has such a connection to Rabbainu as this holy Tzadik — in the aspect of Moshe. And Rabbainu the Holy one said one must be at Tzadikim on the eve of Rosh Hashana and Rosh Hashana. And R' Avraham, of blessed memory, brings in Biur HaLikutim [ביאור הלקוטים — "Explanation of the Teachings" — a Breslov commentary by R' Avraham ben Nachman of Tulchin] that wherever Rabbainu uses the language "a Tzadik" or "a true Tzadik" — he means the Rashbi and the holy Ari, etc. Therefore — you must be full of truly great joy! And remember what Rabbainu the Holy one said: he accomplished before G‑d that He should not take his people from the world while they are still in the middle of their work. And one must yearn and hope — for Rabbainu the Holy one said: "You need to rush very much — so that you may still manage to snatch something." Therefore one must truly yearn and yearn a great deal and hope, and think about how to take out the Daughter of the King. And with all this — one must be only in joy. One must revive oneself with whatever one can, and not allow oneself to be flung down in any way, whatever the circumstances. There is absolutely no despair in the world. One needs both: awakening and strengthening. "Where is the place of His glory? And the whole earth is full of His glory." [from the Kedushah prayer] "I will sing to my G‑d while I still live." [Psalms 146:2] "I went astray like a lost sheep, etc." [Psalms 119:176] And the essential thing now: be primarily only in joy, and strengthen yourself and revive yourself — for however it is, happy are we and happy are we — and you understand enough. [Yiddish — detailed medical advice:] "And above all — the essential thing: drink a lot of cooked warm milk every day — approximately the measure of a rotl [a unit of liquid volume — about one liter], or less. And olive oil — Rabbainu the Holy one brings that this is a refuah [healing remedy] for the lungs. And animal leg-broth is a great healing — have them cook animal legs for you, and eat the fat of the broth. And if you can obtain almond milk [מנדיל מיליך — Yiddish: almond milk] — this is a healing for spitting, G‑d forbid. And be careful not to look at and pay attention to what you are spitting — for it has a drawing force, G‑d forbid. Only divert your mind from it entirely and do not pay attention to it at all. And the essential thing — pray to Hashem as much as you can. And the essential thing: only hope and hope in G‑d, blessed be He — in the merit of Rabbainu the Holy one who said 'What do you have to worry about — since I go before you,' and who said 'Rely on my strength.' And the essential thing — be in joy: only joy."

[Yiddish:] "Also I hereby inquire of your good welfare from the depths of the heart. And I wish you complete healing. Amen — in the merit of Rabbainu the Holy and Awesome Nachman, Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman, of blessed memory. And I always pray for you. Only — strengthen yourself and do not despair — for this is the essential service of the holy Rebbe, of blessed memory. And the essential thing is to be in joy — as it says in the Sefer HaMiddos: one who is always joyful — through this he succeeds. Amen, so may it be His will. I would have written more — only my head is not in its place right now. G‑d willing — in the next letter I will write more. And you will already be well, G‑d willing. Be well and strong and wealthy and joyful." From me — your faithful loving companion, truly: Yaakov Zev the Cohen, the Breslover. Joyfully! Hope! Hope! Hope!

From me — your mighty friend who awaits your salvation truly: Shmuel Horowitz, the Breslover. [Yiddish closing:] "Brother — live! Be well and strong and wealthy and joyful and lively. Joyful and joyful and lively, joyful, joyful! Hope, brother, hope! And upright! Joyful, with aplenty as it should be. Joyful! Joyful! Brother — hold on! The Master Above is with you, and next to you, and within you. And wherever you have fallen — you are still with G‑d, blessed be He — for 'the whole earth is full of His glory,' and you understand enough." [Hebrew:] (My dear brother — live! Be well and strong and wealthy and joyful. Lively, lively. Be well and strong. Oh (Gott!) — be joyful truly, on the strength of Rabbainu the Holy one.)
