"Why Do You Not Write?" — Purim Leads to Pesach — The Holy Month of Nissan
מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2
[Yiddish:] "My dear, righteous brother — oh (Gott!) — what are you doing abandoning yourself so? You are not writing any letter! Lag BaOmer is coming! Such holy days are coming — the month of Nissan — in which the entire month is in the aspect of Rosh Chodesh, and it is like the month of Tishrei. And such holy days are coming: Pesach and the Sefira [the forty-nine days of the Omer between Pesach and Shavuos] — and how much we can save ourselves! Look deeply in Likutay Etzos, Teshuvat HaShanah [תשובת השנה — the section on annual repentance in Likutay Etzos; based on the teachings of the rabbi of Tcherin] from the Rav of Tcherin, on Pesach with the Sefira — and you will literally be revived. And you will know what you have to do. And remember well — Erev Rosh Chodesh Nissan is coming — which was the day of the journey to Rabbainu, of blessed memory, and it is in the aspect of Rosh Hashana."
[Yiddish:] "My dear brother — oh (Gott!) — do not abandon yourself! I am writing this to you, my brother — believe me — how much is happening to me also, and it is very hard for me to hold on. It is now Purim — three years that I am struggling without measure. Literally not a moment without affliction — and my mental obstructions and my weakness — only G‑d, blessed be He, knows. Day by day I say: what will be in the end? But even so — one must hold on regardless, and under no circumstances fall — whatever the circumstances — for there is absolutely no despair in the world at all. And the essential thing is the longings and yearnings. One must yearn very greatly. Then G‑d, blessed be He, will certainly help — only do not fall! G‑d, blessed be He, knows the truth — how greatly I want you to be truly saved. Only one must pray — each for the other." My dear brother — my heart gives me very great pain when I remember how we once held ourselves together, and how we yearned for the service of Hashem — and today, to our sorrow, we are so very far. Only one must believe that everything is for good — and everything will be transformed to good. My dear brother — oh (Gott!) — save your body and do not abandon yourself. Rabbainu the Holy one, of blessed memory, brings: repair of the body takes precedence over repair of the soul. Eat soft eggs in milk. If you can obtain almond milk — it is very good to drink. Take this remedy: boil heads of garlic in milk — and eat and drink it. And see not to allow yourself any sadness or any sorrow at all — only joy and joy! And specifically joy. And especially since the month of Nissan is coming — in which Rabbainu, of blessed memory, brings in Likutay Moharan, part two, Torah Five: one is saved from the blemish of the bris, etc.
[The letter was delayed; a brief additional note added:] My dear brother — please write to us of your good welfare — and do not worry at all. Know: they have begun to print in Poland the Likutay Etzos of Rabbainu, of blessed memory, with a Hebrew-Yiddish commentary from R' Shimshon, Rabbainu's grandson. And there is already with R' Noton, may he live, here — a first portion of hundreds of pages. My dear brother — study deeply in Likutay Etzos, Teshuvat HaShanah. And be joyful, and pray for me. And yearn for the service of Hashem. And study Likutay Etzos, Teshuvat HaShanah.
From me — your true friend: Shmuel Horowitz, the Breslover. All the fellowship inquire of your good welfare with great love. And especially our dear friend R' Yaakov Zev, may he live. And they all wish you complete healing of soul and body, and a joyful and kosher Pesach — each one individually.
