Three Rubles Sent Via R' Shimshon — A Pidyon at the Holy Tzion
מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2
After warmly greeting your honor with great love — as fitting — I hereby inform you of our welfare here, thanks to G‑d, blessed be He. We have life and peace with us. May Hashem grant that I merit to come very soon for this Rosh Hashana — to be at the holy Tzion — and to see you all face to face. Amen, so may it be His will. I am hereby sending to your honor — through our dear precious companion, Rabbainu the Holy one's grandson, R' Shimshon [נכד רבינו הק' ה"ה הרה"ח ר' שמשון נ"י], may he live — the sum of 3 rubles for the fellowship. And I ask of your honor to perform a pidyon at the Tzion of Rabbainu the Holy one — on behalf of the following names. And also to pray greatly for compassion — and to arouse all the fellowship to pray for great compassion. The essential: that I merit to come very soon this year — to the holy Tzion — especially for Rosh Hashana. For G‑d, blessed be He, knows my situation — in spiritual and in material matters — and it is impossible to assess: that for four and a half years [this places the suffering from approximately Rosh Hashana 1923 — consistent with the post-wedding crisis first described in Letter 33] I have been suffering severe and bitter torments — because I want to be a Breslov Chassid. And so many kinds of humiliation and bloodshed [שפיכות דמים — "shedding of blood" — used here as an idiom for extreme disgrace and suffering; not literal bloodshed]. And I am wandering — for my wife has made a separation [פירוד — the marriage has broken down] because of the above. These years I am suffering — no peace and no divorce [לא שלום ולא גט — he is trapped: his wife's family refuses to resolve the marriage one way or the other; neither reconciliation nor a divorce is being offered]. And "a man's wandering is worse than a woman's wandering" [טלטולא דגברא קשה מדאיתתא — Talmud Bavli, Kesubos 28a — a man uprooted from his home suffers more than a woman in the same situation; R' Shmuel invokes this to describe the severity of his displacement]. And especially in this time — when licentiousness and desire intensify greatly. And I have absolutely no counsel whatsoever.
