Letter 49 מ"ט
מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2
Peace and blessing and all good forever — to my beloved dear brother, my soul's companion — the dear young man — our Master R' Yisrael Dov, may he live.
After warmly greeting you with great love — I hereby inform you of my welfare, thanks to G‑d, blessed be He. Please inform me of your good welfare — and of the welfare of all the fellowship of Jerusalem: R.A.B.Tz., may he live, and Yaakov Zev, and Yechiel, and R' Shlomo Veksler, and all the fellowship. And the welfare of R' Shlomo Kavler and of my family from Tzfas — R' Avner, etc. And what is happening with you — in material and spiritual matters. And whether R' Leibel Rozenfeld [a Breslov companion] is already in Eretz Yisrael. Please, my dear brother — I make you my agent [שליח] at the Tzion of the Rashbi, of blessed memory — to pray for me: that I merit very soon to come to Eretz Yisrael. For literally my vitality depends on this — to emerge from the darkness — from this exile that I am in the diaspora. Oh (Gott!) — shake greatly with compassion for me — at all the holy graves. And especially the Tzion of the Rashbi, of blessed memory. And arouse the fellowship of Jerusalem — or R' Zev from Jaffa — to send me the formal request. For literally my life depends on this.
My dear brother — I ask you to give me life with holy words — with the vitality of Eretz Yisrael — with the greatness of Rabbainu, of blessed memory. Remind me — where I am! Write to me often — always! And I will reply to you. Give me life — write to me joyful letters. Everything that is happening in Eretz Yisrael — and the whole story of the pogrom [פגרם — a pogrom; this refers to the 1929 Hebron Massacre and the broader Arab riots of that year, which had devastated the Jewish communities of Eretz Yisrael. R' Shmuel, in distant Uman, is anxiously asking for news of the community he loves] — and how many Jews — and who among those I know was killed — and what is happening in Meron — and how was Lag BaOmer — and how was Rosh Hashana. From me — your companion mentioned above.
