Destitution in Jerusalem — Not a Penny, Not a Piece of Bread
מכתבי שמואל - Michtevay Shmuel Volume 2

I have no place to sleep and no food to eat. And I suffer the shame of hunger [חרפת רעב — a biblical phrase: "the disgrace of hunger"; the nakedness of destitution]. And I have not even a single piece of bread to eat. And what shall I do? I do not have even a single perutah [the smallest coin]. Therefore I say to you — for the sake of Heaven: have compassion on me, and please see to send me some shillings [שילינג — a small denomination coin] immediately and without any delay whatsoever. The situation here is bad. And G‑d, blessed be He, will say "enough" to my troubles. And one must receive everything with love.
