§ 1 Alef — The Letter Alef א ALEF — Numerical Value: 1 | 114 source entries [Translator's Note] The entries begin with the letter Alef itself — its shape, hidden form, and components — then proceed alphabetically through all Hebrew words beginning with Alef. Every entry records a mystical connection taught by Rebbe Nachman. Hebrew is always shown alongside the English. Cross-references (where the same connection appears listed from both directions) are presented as single unified entries. Hebrew Entry English Translation & Explanation Source א Shape / Form The letter Alef (א) embodies three components: an upper point, a lower point, and a Vov (ו) between them. In this way the Alef carries the visual form of the letters ר׳י׳ו׳ — Reish-Yud-Vov — whose numerical value is 216. [The two Yuds (upper and lower strokes) plus the diagonal Vov are the three visible strokes composing the Alef. The number 216 = Gevurah / strength — revealing that the silent Alef carries tremendous hidden power.] The letters of Adam are: א׳לף (Alef — the divine soul-breath) and דם (dam — blood, the body). Man is the union of the divine and the physical. Likutay Mooharan 6:5 א׳ד׳ם׳ Multiple Each letter of Adam corresponds to a spiritual dimension: Alef (א) corresponds to Chochmah (Wisdom); Dalet (ד) alludes to the four elements; Mem (מ) corresponds to the aspect of ta'anis (fasting / self-restraint). Adam (= 45) = the Divine Name מ"ה [the full-spelling יוד הא ואו הא = 45], known as the Name of milui Alfin. Adam (= 45) = three times Yud-Heh (15 × 3 = 45).

Likutay Mooharan 37:6 א Shape / Form The letter Alef consists of two Yuds (ב׳ יודין) with a Vov (ואו) between them. [Yud(10) + Vov(6) + Yud(10) = 26 = the numerical value of the four-letter Name of G-d, יהוה. The letter Alef has the shape of the letters יוד ואו דלת — Yud, Vov, Dalet — which is the full spelling of the letter Yud itself (יוד = Yud-Vov-Dalet, gematria 20). The Alef's form is thus the full-spelled Yud. The Patriarchs (אבות, Avos) correspond to the Divine Name שדי (Sha-dai): the three Patriarchs correspond to the letter ש (Shin, with its three prongs); and the acronym of י׳י א׳לקינו י׳י — "Hashem our G-d, Hashem" — which consists of 14 letters, is itself the acronym of א׳ברהם י׳צחק י׳עקב — Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov — thus forming ש-די. Likutay Mooharan 42 אביב Notarikon Aviv (אביב, "spring") is understood as: אלף עם בית, יוד עם בית — "Alef together with Beis; Yud together with Beis" — the letters immediately before and after Beis (the first letter of the Torah). Sofay Saveivos The final letters of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov — ם, ק, ב — spell בקם (bekom, "in their arising / standing up"). Avraham (אברהם) is an expression of אבוא רם — "I shall bring [that which is] exalted" or "the exalted one shall come." Likutay Mooharan 87 אדם Notarikon Adam (אדם, "man") cannot be pronounced without the letter Alef — for the name of Alef begins with Alef, yet Alef itself is silent. Man exists only because of the silent divine breath that animates him. The letters of Adam in their natural order are א, ד, ם — no rearrangement needed — showing that Man is constituted exactly as he is. [These are two distinct teachings from the same source: one about the Alef's silence within the word Adam; the second noting that the letters need no permutation — Adam is complete as written.] Likutay Mooharan II:82 אדם — א׳לף דם Tziroof אל דמי / אלקים Tziroof Al Domi (אל דמי, "do not be silent / give yourself no rest") is formed from the letters of Elokim (אלקים) — and conversely, the word Elokim can yield al domi. Os (אות, "letter / sign") — the word os is contained within צבאות (Tzvaos, "Hosts" — a Divine Name): tzeva-os contains the word os. [Every Divine Name carries within it the secret of the holy letters.] Likutay Mooharan 31:5 אותיות Gematria The letters of the Hebrew alphabet correspond to the aspect of ר"ע (270) — for there are 27 letters (22 standard + 5 final forms), and each letter contains ten inner dimensions, making 270 in total. The deepest meaning of "I" is total self-surrender to G-d. Anochi (אנכי, "I" — the more emphatic form, the first word of the Ten Commandments) — first letters of א׳נא נ׳פשי כ׳תיבת י׳הבית: "I hereby give over my soul in writing."
