עִנְיַן מַעֲלַת וְאֵיכוּת הַבִּטָּחוֹן - עַיֵּן "מָמוֹן וּפַרְנָסָה" אוֹתִיּוֹת י

1

Sometimes when a person rebukes themselves or their fellow — and begins to recall the bad deeds that were done — it often happens that they fall even further and further — for their mind falls greatly. And some have fallen greatly through this — and all this flows from the aspect of rebuke that is not as it should be — which weakens the power of the soul by arousing the foul smell of sins. For the essential rebuke must be in the aspect of inclining toward kindness — searching and finding in oneself and also in one's fellow — at the very least — some good points. And the rebuke must be in a path of kindness — to strengthen oneself and one's fellow in Hashem — and to trust in His immense compassion — that He has such kindness that even all the bad deeds can be converted into merits — even if one has sinned greatly. For: "with Hashem is kindness — and with Him is abundant redemption." And the essential rebuke must be in a manner that strengthens oneself and one's fellow to arouse toward Hashem — and to begin from now to draw close to Him — and not cause even further damage through one's rebuke — causing one to fall even more. And to such rebuke one only merits through binding oneself to the Tzadikim of the generation — who are the aspect of Moshe — through whose rebuke they add and give a good fragrance to the souls.
