The good point [nekudah tovah] within every Israelite is the aspect of day — the aspect of light. And the evil is the aspect of night and darkness. And through searching and finding within oneself the good points — and strengthening oneself thereby in the service of Him, blessed be He — through this the evil is separated and nullified entirely, as explained elsewhere. And then one distinguishes between day and night.

When Israel are on a lower level — this is the aspect of the blemish of the moon [pegam ha-levanah] — which is drawn through the moon's accusation [kitrug ha-yarei'ach]. From there all sins and blemishes come, G-d forbid, as is known. And through finding within oneself good points and thereby returning in teshuvah — this is the aspect of filling the moon from its blemish. And this is the aspect of the stars that Hashem, blessed be He, gave to her to appease her, as our Rabbis stated. For the stars hint at the aspect of the good points found within every Israelite — through which the Tzadikim judge everyone toward the scale of merit — until they truly bring them into the scale of merit and they return in teshuvah. This is the aspect of: "and those who justify the many — like the stars" [u-matzdikei ha-rabbim ka-kochavim] [Daniel 12:3].
