סימן ט"ז-רבי יוחנן משתעי

Siman Sixteen — Rabbi Yochanan Mishtaayסימן טז — רבי יוחנן משתעי This discourse was said on Shabbas at the morning meal [se'udas shacharis] in the middle of the summer of [5]563. And then people gathered to him suddenly on that Shabbas — for it was not a regular time of gathering at all [as is explained elsewhere: that the essential time of the assembly and the gathering to him on a regular basis — according to his own view — was six times a year]. And at first he expressed some displeasure and said: "You are making Shabbases for yourselves" — meaning: for he himself had made and established for us the Shabbases to come to him then — and now we had made ourselves a Shabbas of gathering on our own initiative. Afterwards he said: "At that time I wanted to do something regarding the decrees [which are called pinktin] that were heard in the world — that they wished to decree against Israel, G-d forbid" — meaning: he wanted to engage with them to sweeten and nullify them. "But as for me — what am I? For I am myself a simple man. Therefore people gathered suddenly so that I could do what I need to do in this matter." And he then said the matter printed in Siman 166 — that regarding Elisha, sometimes it is written "Elisha" simply, and sometimes it is written "man of G-d" — and it is stated in the Sages' words that when he was alone he was called simply "Elisha," and when the sons of the prophets were with him he was called "man of G-d." And he said Torah twice that day: on Friday night he said the Torah Amtzaita d'Alma Heicah [the middle of the world — where?] — which is in Siman 24. And in the morning at the Shabbas meal he said this above discourse — which is Rabbi Yochanan Mishtaay. And he said then that there are seventy nations — and they are comprised in Eisav and Yishmael — which comprises thirty-five nations and which comprises thirty-five nations — and in the future the two Meshichin [anointed ones] — Mashiach son of Yosef and Mashiach son of Dovid — will conquer them. And there is one Tzaddik who comprises both Meshichin together. [See the holy Zohar, portion Pinchas, p. 246b and p. 252.] And he said then several more things beyond what was printed. And then the table broke from the crowd of people pressing upon it — and he expressed displeasure. And he mentioned then the verse: "and all the nations shall stream to him" — and this verse is relevant to the above Torah as is brought there — for such was his way: all his conversations were relevant to the Torah he was then engaged with — as is explained elsewhere.
