Beginner: Through weakness of the heart, fears descend upon a person. The mighty have no fear at all, because the seat of strength is the heart itself. One whose heart is firm runs into the thick of battle and overcomes through the courage of his heart. The opposite is the soft-hearted: as Devarim 20:8 warns of 'the man who fears and is soft of heart' — the very softness of heart breeds the fear. Intermediate: **חלישוּת הלב → פחדים.** Ha-gibor has no pachad at all — ikar ha-gevurah ba-lev. One whose lev is chazak runs into kishrei ha-milchamah ve-misgaber by ometz libo. Conversely, **רכי לבב מתפחדים** — "הירא ורך הלבב" (דברים כ:ח); רש"י: 'הירא' — by means of rach levav, through this he fears.
