Petek Nanach Running Commentary on Likutey Moharan

**"Ki setzei la-milchamah..." (Devarim 21:10).** Rabbeinu opens with the war-pasuk and immediately re-grounds it cosmically. **"אָחוֹר וָקֶדֶם צַרְתָּנִי"** (Tehillim 139:5) — *back and front You formed me* — is the master-axis of the torah: **kedem = k'seder, achor = shelo k'seder.** *Kedem* is *aleph-bes b'seder*, the alphabet running forward; *achor* is **תשר"ק** — the same letters in reverse, *shelo k'seder*. **Adam and Chavah live on this axis.** *HaVaYaH b'milui alfin* — yud-vav-dalet, hei-aleph, vav-aleph-vav, hei-aleph — sums in gematria to **45 = MaH = Adam**. *Adam* IS *mah*: "וְנַחְנוּ מָה" (Shemos 16:7), the position of recognized nothingness before HaShem. **Chavah is bechinas malchus peh u'Torah she-b'al peh** (Pesach Eliyahu): she is *dibbur* — "וְלַיְלָה לְלַיְלָה יְחַוֶּה דָּעַת" (Tehillim 19:3); *malchus* is named *peh* because *ein melech b'lo am*, and the people only know the king's will when he reveals it *into his speech*. **The mechanism**: Chavah/malchus is *shelo k'seder* until she is *connected back to Adam/HKBH*. The chiyus of all things is *mochin v'sechel* — "וְהַחָכְמָה תְּחַיֶּה" (Koheles 7:12) — and chochmah is bechinas *mah* (Zohar Bereshis 24a; Tikkun 69 *machshavah = chashov-mah*). *Mah-Adam* IS *HaVaYaH milui alfin*; "לֵית אָדָם בְּלֹא אָלֶף" (Hakdamas Tikkunei Zohar). And HKBH IS the chiyus of all things — "וְאַתָּה מְחַיֶּה אֶת כֻּלָּם" (Nechemiah 9:6). **So the formula**: when malchus-Chavah is *connected to* Adam-Mah-HKBH, she is *full*; **"לַה' הָאָרֶץ וּמְלוֹאָהּ"** (Tehillim 24:1) — the land (= Chavah-malchus) belongs to HaShem, and that belonging is what *fills* it. The man who *splits malchus off for himself* — *"ana emloch"*, "I will reign" — *separates* it from HKBH; her chiyus-source severed, she becomes *davai* (sick, hollow); **"וְכָל לֵבָב דַּוָּי"** (Yeshayah 1:5). And then everything *holech shelo k'seder* — life starts going backwards-alphabet, *tashrak*.

**The yud-vav-dalet diagram.** Bechinas k'seder is named **yud**: chochmah is *yud* (the smallest letter, the point); malchus is **dalet**, the empty doorway (*leis lah mi-garmah klum*). *Yud-vav-dalet* = יוד = the Name spelled-out — chochmah (yud) flowing through vav (the channel of tiferes/vav-uniting) into dalet (malchus). HKBH draws chiyus-of-chochmah from yud into dalet, which fills her. **The closing pasuk-play**: "אָחוֹר וָקֶדֶם צַרְתָּנִי וַתָּשֶׁת עָלַי **כַּפֶּכָה**" (Tehillim 139:5). *Kapecha* — "Your palm" — read as *kafecha*: the letter **כ"ף**, gematria 20, = double yud = the *paired-yud-and-yud* of the Name. So the pasuk maps: *back-and-front You formed me, and You set Your **yud** upon me*. The *yud* is the seal — the chochmah-point that re-orders chaotic life back to k'seder. **What goes wrong**: when a person *takes the dalet (malchus) for himself*, drawing chiyus into his ego rather than letting it flow from HKBH, the *yud collapses into dalet* — and **mi-yud na'aseh davai**: from *yud* you get *davai*, sick. The very vowel-pattern of yud (י-ו-ד) becomes (ד-ו-י) — same letters, reversed. And on the surface of life: "וְכָל לֵבָב דַּוָּי" — every heart sick. **Yirmiyah 10:7 seals the diagnosis**: "כִּי בְכָל חַכְמֵי הַגּוֹיִם וּבְכָל מַלְכוּתָם מֵאֵין כָּמוֹךָ" — among all the wise of the umos and all their malchus, *me-ein kamocha*: their *sechel is not great enough to feed their malchus*. This is exactly what Yerav'am-style *ana emloch* produces: a kingship without enough seichel to vivify itself, fed only from the king's own ego. **The reading-rule for life**: when you find things going *shelo k'seder* — *know* it is because there is *gadlus* somewhere in you, an *ana emloch* you didn't notice. The diagnosis prescribes the cure: *ya'aseh teshuvah v'yashpil es atzmo, v'yih'yeh bechinas mah* — "v'nachnu mah" (Shemos 16:7). Then Chavah returns to bechinas Adam, and life snaps back to k'seder — *achor v'kedem* once again, with the *yud* set above you.

**Ikkar ha-teshuvah is in Chodesh Elul** — *yemei ratzon* — when Moshe ascended for the second luchos and *opened a beaten path* for everyone behind him to walk in. **Moshe's two-fold derech that anyone in Elul can borrow**: **(1) Bind yourself even to the lowest of Yisrael.** Moshe bound himself even to the *pachus she-ba-pchusim*, the least of the least — "וְאִם אַיִן מְחֵנִי נָא" (Shemos 32:32) — *and if not, blot me out*. **"וַיַּקְהֵל מֹשֶׁה"** (Shemos 35:1) is on this read: Moshe was *gathering, unifying, and binding himself with all Yisrael, even with the pachus she-ba-pchusim*. **"כֻּלּוֹ סָג יַחְדָּו"** (Tehillim 53:4) — usually read as accusation (*all have turned aside, together*) — Rabbeinu re-reads as *avodah*: even when I see one Jew who has *sag mi-kol va-kol* turned away from HKBH entirely, *af al pi chen tzarich ani she-niyih'yeh yachdav* — *I still must be together with him*, just as Moshe did. Why is this possible? **Because there is bechinas Elokus even in the dyota tachtonah, even in the eser kisrei di-mesa'avusa**, to fulfill **"וּמַלְכוּתוֹ בַּכֹּל מָשָׁלָה"** (Tehillim 103:19). Bechinas *chirik* (the dot below the letter): "u'b'chirik l'an'chasa lah l'tata, l'hamlich lah al tata'in" (Tikkunei Zohar Tikkun 18, daf 31b) — chirik *sighs* the malchus down to the lowest places to crown her over them. So even the most fallen Jew has Elokus you can find and use as the binding-point. **(2) Find HKBH at every higher level you ascend.** "וּמֹשֶׁה עָלָה אֶל הָאֱלֹקִים" (Shemos 19:3) — *every* place Moshe rose, he found Elokim there waiting. The danger that's the mirror-image: in *gashmiyus* we see the opposite — a man in dachakus often serves HaShem and recognizes Him; the same man, when wealthy, *forgets*. David's *answer*-pasuk: "אִם אֶסַּק שָׁמַיִם שָׁם אָתָּה" (Tehillim 139:8) — *even in shamayim You are there*. The avodah is to find HKBH *at every aliyah*, not lose Him at the top of the ladder. **The cautionary tale — Acher**: Elisha-Acher *ascended to rakia b'shem* and *still kafar ba-ikkar* (Chagigah 14b). The puzzle: shouldn't ascent bring closer to Elokus, not farther? **The answer**: "וַתִּכְהֶינָה עֵינָיו מֵרְאֹת" (Bereshis 27:1) — when you come too close to *or-Elokus* without protection, the light *dims your eye* like staring at the sun. The protective covering: **bechinas segol** — "וּסְגוֹל כַּד אִיהִי בֵּין תְּרֵין דְּרוֹעִין דְּמַלְכָּא" (Tikkunei Zohar Tikkun 18, 31b) — segol's three dots placed *between the King's two arms* shelter the seer. (Shemos 33:22): without that covering, *otzem or ha-kavod* would have harmed even Moshe — *"ki lo yir'ani ha-adam va-chai... v'ra'isa es achorai"*. David's *"וְאַחַר כָּבוֹד תִּקָּחֵנִי"* (Tehillim 73:24) is the bakashah for that same protection: *take me close in Moshe's-style closeness — show me your *achorayim*, the safe-side, with Your *kapayim* shielding me*.

**Now the war pasuk closes everything**. *Holech shelo k'seder* = **hisnaggdus ha-ratzon**: *I want X, life is giving me not-X*. **And milchamah is precisely that** — every war is *opposition of wills* meeting each other. So **"כִּי תֵצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה"** (Devarim 21:10) — when life goes shelo k'seder, when wills oppose your will — **"וּנְתָנוֹ ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ בְּיָדֶךָ"** — HaShem will deliver every opposing-will into your hand, life will start to go *k'seder k'r'tzoncha*. **When?** — "וְשָׁבִיתָ שִׁבְיוֹ" — when you take captive *its captive* — **when you become bechinas mah**, when you draw down *Elokus* upon yourself, *HaVaYaH b'milui alfin*. **Machshavah = chashov-mah** (Zohar Bereshis 24a; Tikkun 69) — *think mah*: continually bind HaShem's Elokus *into your machshavah*. (Shir HaShirim 7:6) — *the King is bound in the channels (rhatim)* — *birhatei mochin dilach* (Tikkun 6, 5a): the King is bound *in the channels of your own intellect*. So *v'shavisa shivyo* operates like this: *every elevated thing drawn down is called *shevi*, captive* — "עָלִיתָ לַמָּרוֹם שָׁבִיתָ שֶׁבִי" (Tehillim 68:19) — and your job in war is to *capture* HKBH *into your own machshavah*, lacing the King-in-the-channels. **When the King is in your channels, every opposing-will is automatically broken.** Because every opposing-will is in some other channel — political, financial, marital, internal — and once your channels are running malchus-d'kedushah, the others run dry. **The teshuvah-process at root**: identify the *ana emloch* you didn't see (the gadlus that pushed Chavah from Adam); *humble yourself to mah*; let HaShem set the *yud* of His chochmah upon your dalet of malchus; the order of your life turns from *davai* back into *yud*; the milchamah ends with the captive at your feet, and the captive turns out to have been HKBH-in-your-own-mochin all along. **Rabbeinu's closing reference**: *zeh ha-sod nirmaz b'Etz Chayim ba-hakdamah ba-klal yud-tes, u'b'kavanos shel Rosh Chodesh Elul.* The torah is keyed to the avodah of Elul — *exactly the time the Jew prepares for the Rosh HaShanah-Yom Kippur war for his year's malchus*. *Ki setzei la-milchamah* is the daily Elul siman.
