א. לְפִי הַחִדּוּשׁ שֶׁאָדָם מְחַדֵּשׁ בַּתּוֹרָה, כֵּן נִמְשָׁךְ לוֹ הֶאָרָה מִקְּדֻשַּׁת אֶרֶץ-יִשְׂרָאֵל. ב. עַל-יְדֵי אַסְמַכְתּוֹת נִשְׁפָּע פַּרְנָסָה גְּדוֹלָה לָעוֹלָם. וְזֶה כִּי יֵשׁ כַּמָּה דְּבָרִים, שֶׁלֹּא מָצִינוּ לוֹ מִקְרָא מִן הַתּוֹרָה, וְטָרְחוּ חֲכָמֵינוּ, זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה, לִמְצֹא לָהֶם אַסְמַכְתָּא בְּעָלְמָא.

ג. עַל-יְדֵי חִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא נִתְגַּלֶּה הַשְׁגָּחַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ יוֹתֵר לִבְנֵי-אָדָם. ד. כְּשֶׁאֶחָד מִבְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל נִתְפָּס בִּתְפִיסָה, עַל-יְדֵי-זֶה לְפִי בְּחִינָתוֹ נִסְתְּמוּ מַעַיְנוֹת הַחָכְמָה מֵחַכְמֵי הַדּוֹר, וּלְהֵפֶךְ כְּשֶׁיוֹצֵא מֵהַתְּפִיסָה.
Through 'asmachtos' [lit. supports, this is a term used by the Talmud when a rabbinic ordinance is provided with some sort of bases from Scripture – this is explained in the continuation of this adage], abundant livelihood is bestowed upon the world. This is because there are many things for which we do not find an [explicit] verse from the Torah and our sages, of blessed memory, labored to find for them some sort of support. Through novel Torah interpretations, the Providence of Hashem, may He be blessed, is more revealed to people.
ה. עַל-יְדֵי חִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא נִתְוַּסֵּף גֵּרִים. ו. כְּשֶׁאָדָם רוֹצֶה לְהַשִּׂיג אֵיזֶהוּ הַשָּׂגָה בַּתּוֹרָה, אֲזַי נִתְעוֹרֵר עָלָיו קִטְרוּג גָּדוֹל, וְאָז הוּא בְּסַכָּנָה גְּדוֹלָה וְצָרִיךְ לְהִתְלַבֵּשׁ אֶת עַצְמוֹ בִּקְלַסְתֵּר פָּנִים שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם וְאָז נִצּוֹל מֵהַקִּטְרוּג.
When one of the children of Israel is incarcerated, through this, according to his aspect, the wellsprings of wisdom are concealed from the wise of the generation. The opposite is true when he is released from the incarceration. Through novel Torah interpretations, there are additional converts.
ז. מְחַדְּשֵׁי אוֹרַיְתָא צְרִיכִים לִלְמֹד קֹדֶם הַחִדּוּשׁ פּוֹסְקִים וְגַם אַחַר-כָּךְ. וְהַלִּמּוּד פּוֹסְקִים הוּא הַשְּׁמִירָה שֶׁל הַחִדּוּשִׁין, שֶׁלֹּא יִגַּע בָּהֶן זָר. גַּם כְּשֶׁרוֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת צְדָקָה צָרִיךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת כֵּן כְּמוֹ בְּחִדּוּשִׁין.
When a person wants to attain any conception in Torah, then great accusation is aroused upon him. He is then in great danger, and needs to clothe himself in the visage of Abraham. He will then be saved from the accusation.
ח. הַחִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא וְהַצְּדָקָה, כָּל אֶחָד מְעוֹרֵר אֶת חֲבֵרוֹ. י. לָאו כָּל הַחִדּוּשִׁין שֶׁאָדָם מְחַדֵּשׁ בַּתּוֹרָה מֻתָּר לוֹ לִכְתֹּב, כִּי יֵשׁ שֶׁלֹּא נִתָּן לִכְתֹּב אַף-עַל-פִּי שֶׁנִּתְּנוּ לִדְרשׁ. וּמִי שֶׁיּוֹדֵעַ אֵיזֶהוּ לִכְתֹּב וְאֵיזֶהוּ לֹא, הוּא יוֹדֵעַ וּמַכִּיר יְהוּדִי אֶחָד בֵּין אֶלֶף ]אֲלָפִים[ מִן הָאֻמּוֹת.
Torah innovators need to learn Torah codifiers before the innovation, and also afterwards. The study of the codifiers is a protection for the innovations, so that no stranger may touch them. Also, when a person wants to do charity, it is necessary to act the same way as with the innovations. According to the novel Torah interpretations, so are novelties innovated in the work of Creation.
ט. לְפִי הַחִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא כֵּן נִתְחַדֵּשׁ חִדּוּשִׁין בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית. יא. צָרִיךְ אָדָם לִשְׁמֹר מִלּוֹמַר דִּבְרֵי תוֹרָה בְּעֵת וּבְמָקוֹם שֶׁאֵינָם נִשְׁמָעִים, וַאֲפִלּוּ בְּעֵת וּבְמָקוֹם שֶׁנִּשְׁמָעִים, צָרִיךְ לִשְׁקֹל אוֹתָם כַּמָּה יֹאמַר, שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה בִּבְחִינַת "כָּל רוּחוֹ יוֹצִיא כְּסִיל". כִּי עַל-יְדֵי-זֶה מֵבִיא חוֹלַאַת שֶׁקּוֹרִין "גֶישְׁוִוילִיכְץ", כִּי הַחוֹלַאַת הַזֹּאת בָּא עַל-יְדֵי הִתְגַּבְּרוּת הַמַּיִם שֶׁבַּדָּם, וְזֶה "לַעֲשׂוֹת לְרוּחַ מִשְׁקָל וּמַיִם תִּכֵּן בְּמִדָּה".
Novel Torah interpretations and charity -- each one arouses one’s friend. Not every novel interpretation that a person innovates in Torah is permitted for him to write. For some are not given to write, even though they are given to expound. Someone who knows which are to be written, and which not, he will know and recognize one Jew among a thousand (alternate text: thousands) gentiles (lit. from the nations).
יב. עַל-יְדֵי חִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא זוֹכֶה לְטַלִּית נָאָה.
A person needs to be careful not to speak words of Torah at a time and place when they will not be heard. Even at a place and time when they will be heard, it is necessary to weigh how many of them to say, so that he will not be in the aspect of “a fool emits all of his spirit” (Proverbs 29:11). Because, through that, he brings about a disease called “geshvilleks” (swelling). Because this disease comes about through an overwhelming amount of water in the blood. And this is (Job 28:25), “to make a weight for the spirit, and water He established in measure.”
יג. הַצַּדִּיק מִתְיַגֵּעַ אֶל אֵיזֶהוּ חֵפֶץ אוֹ עַל אֵיזֶהוּ דְּבַר תּוֹרָה לְהַשִּׂיגָהּ, וְאַחַר-כָּךְ בָּא זֶה הַדָּבָר לְאָדָם פָּחוּת בְּלִי יְגִיעָה וְעָמָל, וְכָל זֶה כִּי כְּבָר הַפֶּתַח פָּתוּחַ.
Through novel Torah interpretations, one merits a nice Tallit [-prayershawl].
יד. כְּשֶׁאֵיזֶהוּ רָשָׁע נִתְגַּדֵּל, אֲזַי קָשֶׁה לְחַדֵּשׁ אֵיזֶהוּ סְבָרָא בַּפּוֹסְקִים. גַּם דִּבְרֵי הַדַּיָּנִים אֵינָם נִשְׁמָעִים בְּאָזְנֵי הַבַּעֲלֵי-דִינִים.
The Tzadik toils towards some desire or some matter of the Torah to attain it. Afterwards, this thing comes to a lesser person without toil or labor. All this is because the door had already been opened.
טו. כְּשֶׁמְּגַלֶּה אֵיזֶהוּ טַעַם מִטַּעֲמֵי הַתּוֹרָה, עַל- יְדֵי-זֶה רוּחַ הַבְּרִיּוֹת נוֹחָה הֵימֶנּוּ.
When some wicked person becomes great, then it becomes difficult to innovate any reasoning in the (works of the) Torah codifiers. Also, the words of the judges are not acceptable in the ears of the litigants.
טז. קְטַנֵּי אֲמָנָה - קָשֶׁה לָהֶם לְהַשִּׂיג חִדּוּשִׁין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא.
When one reveals a reason from the reasons of the Torah, through this, the (spirit of the) people (lit. creations) are pleased (comfortable) with him. Those of little faith, it is difficult for them to conceive novel Torah interpretations.
