Sefer Hamidos - The Book of Traits
א. עַל-יְדֵי הַחֲקִירוֹת בְּעוֹלַם הַתֹּהוּ, הַיְנוּ מַה לְּמַעְלָה מַה לְּמַטָּה וְכוּ', עַל-יְדֵי-זֶה גּוֹרֵם קְלָלָה, וְהַשּׁוֹמֵר אֶת עַצְמוֹ מֵחֲקִירוֹת הָאֵלּוּ גּוֹרֵם בְּרָכָה.
Contemplation of the world of chaos - that is, what is above and what is below… (concepts beyond our grasp) -causes curse. Conversely, one who guards himself from these investigations causes blessing.
ב. עַל-יְדֵי הַחֲקִירָה בְּמַה לְּמַעְלָה וּמַה לְּמַטָּה וְכוּ', עַל-יְדֵי-זֶה מְזוֹנוֹתָיו בִּיגִיעָה רַבָּה.
Due to speculating about what is above and below… one's sustenance comes with great effort.
ג. הַמַּעֲמִיק בְּעִיּוּנוֹ בְּמַעֲשֵׂי מֶרְכָּבָה, נִסְתַּלֵּק קֹדֶם זְמַנּוֹ.
One who delves deeply into the subject of the Chariot (“merkava” a mystical Kabbalistic concept of the Divine Presence) passes away before his time.
