Sefer Hamidos - The Book of Traits
Through adulation, one comes into the grip of foul language, and the opposite is also true. Through adulation, one's wife becomes a widow, and his children orphans, and no one has compassion on them.
Through adulation comes fright. Someone who walks in the marketplace and falls, it is certain that he has adulation in him. Through adulation comes heartache. Someone who relies on others, comes into the grip of adulation.
One who guards himself from adulation, through this, salvation comes to him. It is permitted to adulate wicked people in this world. Through adulation, judgment is aroused.
Also, one's prayer is not heard, and one becomes repulsive in everyones' eyes.
