עַל־יְדֵי שִׁכְרוּת נוֹפֵל מִמַּדְרֵגָתוֹ.
1. Through drunkenness, one falls from his level.
עַל־יְדֵי שְׁתִיַּת יַיִן, לְסוֹף שֶׁמְּקַבֵּל שֹׁחַד.
2. Through drinking wine, one ends up accepting bribes.
הַשִּׁכְרוּת מֵבִיא לִידֵי כְּפִירָה בָּאֱמֶת וּלְהוֹדוֹת לַשֶּׁקֶר.
3. Drunkenness brings one to deny truth and to attest to falsehood.
הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא אוֹהֵב מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִשְׁתַּכֵּר.
4. The Holy One, Blessed be He, loves one who never gets drunk.
הַשֶּׁמֶן מְבַטֵּל הַשִּׁכְרוּת.
5. Oil nullifies drunkenness.
הָרְאִיָּה מְשַׁכֶּרֶת בְּיוֹתֵר.
6. Vision intensifies drunkenness.
עַל־יְדֵי שִׁכְרוּת נוֹפֵל לְהִרְהוּרֵי נִאוּף.
7. Through drunkenness, one falls to having promiscuous thoughts.
הַשִּׁכּוֹר – אֵין יְכֹלֶת בְּיָדוֹ לְהַמְתִּיק דִּינִים.
8. One who is drunk (/a drunk) does not have the power to sweeten harsh judgments.
הַשִּׁכּוֹר – אֵין מְגַלִּין לוֹ רָזִין דְּאוֹרַיְתָא.
9. One who is drunk (/a drunk) - secrets of the Torah are not to be revealed to him.
יַיִן עִם לְבוֹנָה מַטְרִיפִין דַּעְתּוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם.
10. Wine with the spice of frankincense confound a person.
מִי שֶׁלָּהוּט אַחַר עֲבוֹדַת אֲדָמָה, בָּא לִידֵי אֶחָד מִשְּׁלֹשָׁה, אוֹ לִידֵי שְׁפִיכוּת־דָּמִים אוֹ לִידֵי צָרַעַת אוֹ לִידֵי שִׁכְרוּת.
1. One who is eagerly desirous to work the land, comes to one of three things; either murder, or leprosy, or drunkenness.
הַשִּׁכְרוּת גּוֹרֵם גָּלוּת גַּם גּוֹרֵם הוֹצָאַת זֶרַע לְבַטָּלָה.
2. Drunkenness causes exile, and also causes wanton emission of seed.
אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְשִׁכְרוּת שֶׁלֹּא יָבִיא לְאֵיזֶה תַּקָלָה.
3. It is impossible that drunkenness will not lead to some mishap.
עַל־יְדֵי שִׁכְרוּת הוּא שׁוֹכֵחַ בְּאַזְהָרוֹת מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ, כִּי מֹשֶׁה מְלֻבָּשׁ בִּרְמַ"ח אֵיבָרָיו שֶׁל אָדָם, וּבְכָל אֵיבָר וְאֵיבָר מַזְהִיר אֶת הָאָדָם בְּמִצְווֹת הַתְּלוּיוֹת בּוֹ, וּבִשְׁבִיל זֶה נִקְרָא "מְחֹקֵק" – גִּימַטְרִיָּא רְמַ"ח.
4. Through drunkenness, one forgets the warnings of Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses our leader). For Moshe is enclothed in the 248 limbs of a man and in each and every limb, he warns the man regarding the Mitzvot contingent to it. Because of this Moshe is called “Mechokek” (one who inscribes the law), which has the Gematria (numerical value) of 248 (Likutay Moharan II:26).
עַל־יְדֵי הַשִּׁכְרוּת מַפְשִׁיט אֶת הַדַּעַת מֵהַלְּבוּשׁ חֲסָדִים, וּמַלְבִּישׁוֹ בִּגְבוּרוֹת חֲזָקוֹת, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם.
5. Through drunkenness, one removes the kindness which clothe the 'daas' (realization of knowledge), and clothe it (the daas) with intense harshness, G-d forbid.
מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ שׂוֹנְאִים, יַזִּיר מִן הַיַּיִן, וְעַל־יְדֵי זֶה נַעֲשָׂה רֹאשׁ לָהֶם.
6. One who has enemies should swear off wine, and through this he will become their head.
