וַיְהִי בִּשְׁנַת תק"צ לא הָיָה אֶפְשָׁר עוֹד לְהִתְפַּלֵּל שָׁם וְהָיָה לָנוּ צַעַר גָּדוֹל וּבִקַּשְׁנוּ מָקוֹם לִשְׂכּר וְהִזְמִין לָנוּ הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ דִּירָה חֲדָשָׁה שֶׁהָיְתָה סָמוּךְ לַגְּמָר, וּבִקֵּשׁ אוֹתָנוּ הַבַּעַל הַבַּיִת לְהִתְפַּלֵּל שָׁם, לַחֲנךְ בֵּיתוֹ הֶחָדָשׁ בִּקְדֻשַּׁת תְּפִלּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל יְרֵאִים וּכְשֵׁרִים כָּאֵלּוּ, וְהִתְפַּלַּלְנוּ שָׁם
Afterward — after a brief while — I saw that his life-force was very scant and that it was impossible for him to sit on the chair at all. I returned and commanded that he be carried to his bed. And then he was silent — he said neither yes nor no. And the man from Teravitze took him on his arm and carried him zichrono livracha to his bed and laid him on his bed.
וְאָז סָמוּךְ לְאוֹתוֹ ראשׁ הַשָּׁנָה שָׁלַח הַשֵּׁם בְּלִבִּי הִתְעוֹרְרוּת חָזָק שֶׁאַכְנִיס עַצְמִי בְּכָל כּחִי לְהַתְחִיל לַעֲסֹק בְּבִנְיַן בֵּית הַמִּדְרָשׁ בִּשְׁבִיל הַקִּבּוּץ הַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁלָּנוּ בְּאוּמֶין, וּכְבָר עָלָה זֶה בְּדַעְתִּי וְדִבַּרְנוּ מִזֶּה כְּבָר כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים וְלא אִסְתַּיַּע מִלְּתָא לַעֲסֹק בּוֹ עַד אוֹתָהּ הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁרָאִינוּ שֶׁנִּשְׁאַרְנוּ נָעִים וְנָדִים מְאד וְאָז חִזֵּק הַשֵּׁם אֶת לְבָבִי לַעֲסֹק בָּזֶה וְיָדַעְתִּי כִּי רַבּוּ הַמְּנִיעוֹת לָזֶה מְאד מְאד הֵן מֵחֲמַת מָמוֹן כִּי צְרִיכִים לָזֶה הוֹצָאָה רַבָּה, הֵן מִפַּחַד הַמִּתְנַגְּדִים שֶׁלּא יִמְנְעוּ חַס וְשָׁלוֹם אַךְ יָדַעְתִּי שֶׁאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁבְּכָל עֵת עוֹמְדִים כְּנֶגְדֵּנוּ כְּשֶׁאָנוּ רוֹצִים לַעֲסֹק בַּעֲסָקָיו הַקְּדוֹשִׁים הַנּוֹגְעִים לְהַשְׁאָרָתוֹ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה בָּעוֹלָם, אֲבָל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ עוֹזֵר לָנוּ תָּמִיד לִגְמר הַכּל כַּאֲשֶׁר כְּבָר הָיָה הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּעֶזְרִי בְּעִנְיַן הַהַדְפָּסָה כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים וְכוּ' וְכָל מַה שֶׁעָבַר בָּזֶה אֵין פְּנַאי לְסַפֵּר כִּי בְּוַדַּאי רַבּוּ הַמְּנִיעוֹת וְהִתְנַגְּדוּת אַחַר כָּךְ בְּלִי שִׁעוּר, אַךְ אַף עַל פִּי כֵן חִזַּקְתִּי יָדַי בַּה' עַד שֶׁבְּחֶמְלַת הַשֵּׁם הִנַּחְתִּי יְסוֹד הַבִּנְיָן הַקָּדוֹשׁ בַּשָּׁנָה הַזּאת הִיא שְׁנַת תקצ"ב בְּחֹדֶשׁ חֶשְׁוָן, וְעָסַקְתִּי בָּזֶה שְׁתֵּי שָׁנִים לְקַבֵּץ מָעוֹת וְלִקְנוֹת הַפְּלַאץ [הַשֶּׁטַח] וְכוּ' וְעָבַר בָּזֶה מַה שֶּׁעָבַר בִּפְרָט בַּשָּׁנָה שֶׁעָבְרָה שֶׁהִיא שְׁנַת תקצ"א שֶׁיָּצְאָה בָּעוֹלָם הַחוֹלַאַת הַמָּרָה שֶׁקּוֹרִין חוֹלִירָע רַחֲמָנָא לִצְלַן שֶׁהָיְתָה קָשָׁה מִדֶּבֶר רַחֲמָנָא לִצְלַן שֶׁהֵמִיתָה אֲלָפִים וּרְבָבוֹת נְפָשׁוֹת וְכָל הַחֹרֶף הָיָה הָעוֹלָם סָגוּר הַשֵּׁם יְרַחֵם מֵעַתָּה, וְאַחַר כָּךְ סָמוּךְ לְשָׁבוּעוֹת הָיְתָה הַמְּרִידָה הַגְּדוֹלָה שֶׁל פּוֹלִין שֶׁמָּרְדוּ בְּהַקֵּיסָר יָרוּם הוֹדוֹ, וּבְכָל זאת לא הִנַּחְתִּי אֶת הָרָצוֹן וְהַכִּסּוּפִין, וּלְהִתְפַּלֵּל לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ עַל זֶה וּבְחֶמְלַת הַשֵּׁם לא הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו מֵאִתָּנוּ וַעֲזָרַנִי בִּזְכוּת הָרַבִּים בְּדַרְכֵי נִפְלְאוֹתָיו הַנּוֹרָאוֹת עַד אֵין חֵקֶר, וַעֲזָרָנוּ לְהַנִּיחַ הַיְסוֹד בַּשָּׁנָה הַזּאת מַה שֶּׁלּא הָיָה מִי שֶׁיַּאֲמִין לִשְׁמוּעָתֵנוּ, שֶׁיִּהְיֶה אֶפְשָׁר לָנוּ לְהַעֲמִיד בֵּית הַמִּדְרָשׁ עַל שְׁמוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בְּאוּמֶין אַחֲרֵי מַחֲלוֹקֶת וְהִתְנַגְּדוּת כָּאֵלֶּה אַךְ קֻשְׁטָא קָאֵי וַעֲצַת ה' לְעוֹלָם תַּעֲמד כִּי הוּא גָּמַר וְיִגְמר הַכּל כִּרְצוֹנוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְכִרְצוֹן כָּל יְרֵאָיו הָאֲמִתִּיִּים, הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ יַעַזְרֵנוּ לִגְמר הַבִּנְיָן הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה מְהֵרָה ה' יִגְמר בַּעֲדֵנוּ, יִרְאוּ עֵינֵינוּ וְיִשְׂמַח לִבֵּנוּ וְתָגֵל נַפְשֵׁנוּ בִּישׁוּעָתְךָ בֶּאֱמֶת, אָמֵן:
And as he was being laid down — I grasped his holy hand in my hand, in the manner customary among those who greet one another. And I embraced his hand with a bond of connection [hispakshrus]. And he lay on his bed. And he was dressed in his garments — in a beautiful silk garment. And he commanded Rabbi Shimon to dress him properly — that is, he commanded that the cuffs [arbl] be fastened with the clasps. And he did so. And a bit of the sleeve of his inner garment was extending beyond the sleeve of the outer garment more than was proper. And he signaled him by gesture to tuck it in properly inside the sleeve of the outer garment. And he commanded that his holy beard be washed clean — for there was a little blood from the cough upon it. And he washed it clean. And he lay on his bed with great freedom and serenity — and took a small piece of wax or the like and rolled it between his fingers. And he was absorbed in his awesome thoughts — in the way customary among great men, that when they are thinking through some matter they roll wax between their fingers. And he zichrono livracha had become somewhat accustomed to this toward the end of his days. And even on that last day — in that last hour — his awesome mind was engaged in what it was engaged in. And with his holy hands he rolled a thing between his fingers with wondrous freedom and with a purity, lightness, and beauty that had never been seen the like of. And they gave him a little stew [retev] to eat. And he washed his hands and made the blessing and ate. And afterward — after some hours — they gave him the stew again and he was no longer able to eat. And the matter continued from the time he lay on his bed until he expired — approximately three hours and a little more.
