בְּיוֹם שֵׁנִי פָּרָשַׁת בְּהַר בְּחֻקּתַי הָיָה קְצָת רוּחַ סְעָרָה, וַאֲנִי הָיִיתִי מִתְפַּלֵּל אָז בְּחַדְרֵנוּ הַקָּטָן לְמַטָּה, וְרי"א הָיָה לְמַעְלָה וְעָסַק בְּבִשּׁוּל וְנָפַל עָלָיו פַּחַד גָּדוֹל מֵחֲמַת שֶׁרָאָה שֶׁהַסְּפִינָה נָטְתָה עַל צִדָּהּ מְאד, עַד שֶׁהָיָה הַצַּד הָעֶלְיוֹן שֶׁל הַסְּפִינָה קָרוֹב אֶל הַמַּיִם מְאד, וְהָרוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְחָזֵק וְהַקַּפִּיטַאן וְהַמַּטְרָאסִין כֻּלָּם עָסְקוּ בְּבֶהָלָה וּבְחִפָּזוֹן בִּמְשִׁיכַת הַחֲבָלִים וּשְׁאָר הַתִּקּוּנִים הַצְּרִיכִים כְּפִי הָרוּחַ הַזֶּה, וּמֵחֲמַת זֶה נָפַל עַל רי"א פַּחַד גָּדוֹל מְאד וְגַם אֲנִי בִּשְׁעַת הַתְּפִלָּה, וְלא רָאִיתִי כָּל זֶה רַק מֵחֲמַת סַעֲרַת הָרוּחַ נִפְחַדְתִּי מְעַט, וּבִפְרָט שֶׁיָּדַעְתִּי שֶׁהַסְּפִינָה הוֹלֶכֶת בֵּין הֶהָרִים וּסְמוּכָה לַיַּבָּשָׁה מֵרב הַצְּדָדִים כִּי בְּכָל הַיָּמִים מִיּוֹם שִׁשִּׁי הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל עַד הַיּוֹם יוֹם רְבִיעִי הוֹלֶכֶת הַסְּפִינָה תָּמִיד בֵּין גְּבוּלֵי הַיַּבָּשָׁה מֻקָּף מֵרב הַצְּדָדִים, רַק בְּמָקוֹם אֶחָד יֵשׁ כָּאן שַׁעַר שֶׁנִּכְנָסִין וְיוֹצְאִין בּוֹ וְכֵן הִיא יוֹצֵאת מִשַּׁעַר אֶל שַׁעַר בְּכָל פַּעַם וְאֵלּוּ הַיַּבָּשׁוֹת הֵם מֵאִיֵּי הַיָּם שֶׁמְּצוּיִים הַרְבֵּה בְּיָם זֶה עַל כָּל פָּנִים מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהָלַכְנוּ בֵּין הֶהָרִים, עַל כֵּן מְסֻכָּן חַס וְשָׁלוֹם יוֹתֵר כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ רוּחַ חֲזָקָה אֲבָל אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הָיָה לִבִּי חָזָק וְלא נִפְחַדְתִּי רַק מְעַט, אֲבָל רי"א נִבְהַל מְאד בְּפַחַד גָּדוֹל וְקָרָא אֵלַי בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל וְאָמַר רַבִּי נָתָן אֲהָהּ, אוֹי וַאֲבוֹי וְכוּ' הִתְפַּלְּלוּ וְקִרְאוּ אֶל ה' וְנִתְגַּלְגֵּל גַּם עָלַי הַפַּחַד יוֹתֵר קְצָת, אֲבָל אַף עַל פִּי כֵן לא נִתְבַּהַלְתִּי כְּלָל וְהִתְפַּלַּלְתִּי כְּדַרְכִּי וְכה נִמְשַׁךְ כַּמָּה שָׁעוֹת גַּם אַחַר כָּךְ בְּעֵת שֶׁאָמַרְתִּי תְּהִלִּים אַחַר הַתְּפִלָּה, חָזַר רי"א וְקָרָא עָלַי בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל וְעָצֵב אֲהָהּ כִּי הַיָּם הוֹלֵךְ וְסוֹעֵר, וְכַיּוֹצֵא בִּלְשׁוֹנוֹת אֵלֶּה וְאָז הִפְסַקְתִּי וְסִלַּקְתִּי מִמֶּנִּי טַלִּית וּתְפִלִּין וּבֶאֱמֶת הָיָה בְּאוֹתוֹ הַיּוֹם קְצָת סַכָּנָה אֲבָל בְּחַסְדֵי ה' לא הָיָה מִזֶּה דָּבָר, וְעָבַרְנוּ בְּשָׁלוֹם גַּם הָרוּחַ סְעָרָה הַנִּזְכֶּרֶת לְעֵיל לא הָיָה פּוֹנֶה לְדַרְכֵּנוּ, וּבִשְׁבִיל זֶה הָיָה לָנוּ גַּם כֵּן צַעַר קְצָת אֲבָל בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם אַף עַל פִּי כֵן סִבְּבוּ אֶת הַסְּפִינָה לְדַרְכֵּנוּ הַנָּכוֹן כְּדֶרֶךְ הַמַּלָּחִים וַה' עֲזָרָנוּ תְּהִלָּה לָאֵל:
And my companion Rabbi Yehuda Eliezer began speaking to me: it was now close to evening, and certainly we would need to sleep there, and we had no place to sleep. And we already knew well that among the Sephardic-Oriental Jews it was very very difficult to find a house to enter — especially Polish people who in their eyes were a mockery and a laughingstock and a matter of scorn. But I said: even Rabbi Yehuda Eliezer's words were an obstacle, and I did not wish to push the matter away — whatever may come, I would go there. And we went out and took with us some books, some of Rabbainu's books zichrono livracha, and my talis and tefilin alone. And we went both of us to the marketplace until we found a Polish-Jew who was acquainted with us. And we asked him to lead us on the road to Uskudar. And he walked with us until he brought us to the gate to the sea. And since the day had already turned toward evening, we were compelled to give the guard two pareis to let us through the gate. (But throughout the whole day nothing was given.) And we came to the seashore, entered a small boat with three or four others who were already seated there, sailed to Uskudar — about half an hour and more over the sea to the shore — and paid the boatman five pareis per person. And we entered Uskudar — I and Rabbi Yehuda Eliezer — and no one knew us there, and no one could understand a single word of our language, and even in the holy tongue it was far to find anyone who understood us. And we walked wandering and roaming, our bundle in our hands, not knowing where to enter. And we began to ask: where was the beis knesses or the beis medrash? And no one understood us — for beis knesses they called "kahal kadosh", and a beis medrash was not found there at all — only a place of learning called yeshivah, and a place where idle men said Psalms was called hesger. All of this we learned afterward — but at the time we did not know any of these words. And we asked where the rav or the chakham was. And the boys who saw us all greatly laughed at us and ran after us at every moment as if after a madman — Heaven forbid.
