וְהִנֵּה בְּראשׁ הַשָּׁנָה זֶה לא הָיָה שׁוּם דֶּרֶךְ הַטֶּבַע שֶׁיּאמַר תּוֹרָה בָּרַבִּים, בִּפְרָט לִפְנֵי אֲנָשִׁים הַרְבֵּה כָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁהָיָה כַּמָּה מֵאוֹת אוֹרְחִים חוּץ בְּנֵי הָעִיר, וְהוּא הָיָה חָלוּשׁ מְאד מְאד וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן הָיָה הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ בְּעֶזְרֵנוּ וְגָמַר כָּל הַתּוֹרָה בָּרַבִּים בַּאֲרִיכוּת נִפְלָאָה, כְּדַרְכּוֹ הַנּוֹרָא, אַשְׁרֵי אזֶן הַשּׁוֹמְעָהּ וְאַחַר כָּךְ לא הָיָה בְּאֶפְשָׁרִי לְהַטְרִיחוֹ שֶׁאֶכְתְּבֶנָּה בְּפָנָיו כִּי הָיָה עָלָיו לְטרַח גָּדוֹל וְהוּא הָיָה חָלוּשׁ מְאד וְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ עֲזָרַנִי בִּדְרָכָיו הַנִּפְלָאִים שֶׁיָּגַעְתִּי בְּכַמָּה יְגִיעוֹת עַד שֶׁכָּתַבְתִּי אוֹתָהּ וְהֶרְאִיתִיהָ לְפָנָיו וְהוּטְבָה בְּעֵינָיו בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ
And before her delivery, Rabbainu zichrono livracha was in very, very great pain — without measure. He showed no pleasant face whatsoever. And he also did not allow them to give him two dishes at his meal. And he sat and waited for her to give birth safely. And afterward, on that same night that she gave birth safely through the salvation of Hashem, he came in great joy — and immediately commanded that candles be lit and that a "pansh" [punch] drink be prepared. And he waited there until after the circumcision, and was then also in joy. Afterward, on the third day after the circumcision, his daughter the new mother mentioned above became ill. And he had very, very great pain — and he left Kreminchak in great haste and panic, as though literally fleeing. And one of his attendants who had traveled with him to serve him lingered there a bit — he left him there and fled from him. And the man mentioned above was left behind in Kreminchak and was compelled to hire a wagon and chase after him for several parsaos [leagues].
