אַחַר כָּךְ צִוָּה עָלַי לְהוֹלִיךְ אוֹתוֹ מֵהַכִּסֵּא לְמִטָּתוֹ, וְלָקַחְתִּי אוֹתוֹ וְהוֹלַכְתִּי אוֹתוֹ, וְהוּא זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה הָיָה ראשׁוֹ וְרֻבּוֹ נִסְמָךְ עָלַי, וְרַגְלָיו הָיוּ מְעַט נוֹגְעִים בָּאָרֶץ, וְהָיָה נִשָּׂא עָלַי עַד שֶׁהֵבֵאתִיו לְמִטָּתוֹ שֶׁלּא הָיְתָה רְחוֹקָה מֵהַכִּסֵּא וּכְשֶׁהֵבֵאתִיו אֶל הַמִּטָּה אָחַזְתִּי אוֹתוֹ וְהִגְבַּהְתִּיו וְהִנַּחְתִּי אוֹתוֹ עַל הַמִּטָּה עָנָה וְאָמַר לְאַט לְאַט (בִּלְשׁוֹן אַשְׁכְּנַז פַּאוָואלֶע פַּאוָואלֶע), וְכָךְ עָשִׂיתִי וְהִנַּחְתִּיו עַל מִטָּתוֹ בִּלְאַט בְּנַחַת וְהָיָה תֵּמַהּ בְּעֵינַי עַל שֶׁהִצְרִיךְ אוֹתִי לְהַזְהִיר עַל זֶה עָנָה וְאָמַר אֲנִי כָּבֵד עַתָּה עַל כֵּן הִזְהַרְתִּיךָ עַל זֶה (כִּי הָאָדָם קָרוֹב לְמִיתָתוֹ הוּא כָּבֵד מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהַחַיּוּת מַתְחִיל לְהִסְתַּלֵּק מִמֶּנּוּ) וּבְכָל זֶה רָמַז לִי שֶׁהוּא קָרוֹב מְאד לְהִסְתַּלְּקוּתוֹ וַאֲנִי לא שָׁמַעְתִּי כָּל זֶה כְּלָל כַּנַּ"ל וְשָׁכַב עַל הַמִּטָּה וְאָז הִסְתַּכֵּל בִּי הַרְבֵּה מְאד כַּנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל וַאֲנִי זָכִיתִי לְשָׁרְתוֹ אָז לְבַדִּי וּלְהוֹשִׁיט לוֹ מַה שֶּׁהָיָה צָרִיךְ אַחַר כָּךְ עָנִיתִי וְאָמַרְתִּי לוֹ רַבִּי קְחוּ אֵיזֶה דָּבָר לְהָשִׁיב נַפְשְׁכֶם הֵשִׁיב מַה תִּתֵּן לִי אָמַרְתִּי מְעַט תֵּה, עָנָה וְאָמַר עִם חֶלְמוֹן בֵּיצָה כִּי אָז הָיוּ נוֹתְנִים לוֹ לִפְעָמִים תֵּה מְבֻשָּׁל עִם חֶלְמוֹן בֵּיצָה שֶׁעוֹשִׂין לְהָקֵל הַהוּסְט וְכֵן עָשִׂיתִי וּבִשַּׁלְתִּי הַתֵּה עִם הַחֶלְמוֹן וְהַסֻּכָּר וְנָתַתִּי לוֹ וְצִוָּה לִתֵּן לוֹ מְעַט מַיִם וְנָטַל יָדָיו וְלָקַח הַתֵּה וְאָמַר שֶׁהִיא חַמָּה עֲדַיִן כִּי אָז הָיָה נִזְהָר שֶׁלּא לִשְׁתּוֹת מַשְׁקֶה חַם שֶׁלּא יְעוֹרֵר הַדָּם שֶׁל הַהוּסְט כִּי אֵיזֶה יָמִים קדֶם הִסְתַּלְּקוּתוֹ פָּסַק מִמֶּנּוּ יְצִיאַת הַדָּם עַל יְדֵי הַהוּסְט וְלָקַחְתִּי הַתֵּה וְהוֹרַקְתִּי מִכְּלִי אֶל כְּלִי לְקָרְרָה קְצָת כַּנָּהוּג, וְאַחַר כָּךְ נָתַתִּי לוֹ וְאָמַר שֶׁעֲדַיִן הִיא חַמָּה, וְלָקַחְתִּי וְקֵרַרְתִּי אוֹתָהּ עוֹד וְאָמַר שֶׁעֲדַיִן הִיא חַמָּה וְכֵן הָיָה כְּמוֹ שָׁלשׁ וְאַרְבַּע פְּעָמִים אַחַר כָּךְ אַחַר שֶׁקֵּרַרְתִּי אוֹתָהּ כָּרָאוּי כִּרְצוֹנוֹ, לְקָחָהּ וּבֵרַךְ וְשָׁתָה
And that year Shavuos fell on Sunday. And on Erev Shabbas Kodesh before Shavuos — close to evening — the matter became known to Rabbainu zichrono livracha from others that I now had such obstacles and sufferings. And when it was close to the decline of the day, I entered to him zichrono livracha — for I knew that now it was impossible for him to send me home — for the day had already declined. And he zichrono livracha began to speak with me with the elegance of his holy speech and said to me: "I did not know at all that you now have such obstacles. Had I known — you certainly would have been compelled to return home. Nothing would have helped — you would have been compelled to return. But now that you are already here — after all, once one gets through everything that passes over a person — then certainly this matter is better than everything." And he said it in the Ashkenazic tongue: "Az me kumt alding iber, iz dos fort besser." And I merited to be with him for Shavuos. And I heard the awesome Torah teaching "And I commanded the ravens" [Likutay Tinyanna §4]. And I wrote it with the help of Hashem Blessed be He. And in this matter there is much to tell — how he would conduct himself with his people in such matters when they asked him about matters that required self-sacrifice — for he would prevent the person even though in truth he greatly desired them to be with him. And he said explicitly: "When someone asks me — I am compelled to answer him thus." And there are wondrous stories about this that passed with many of the men of our circle in such matters.
