(ט) אמר המעתיק: שמעתי, שפעם אחת דחקה אותו אמו הצדקת זכרונה לברכה, באשר שהעולם משבחין אותו ואומרים עליו גדולות כאלה, על כן יאמר נא לה גם כן ויספר לה מה מדרגתו בעבודת השם. השיב לה מה אמר לך אני סר מרע באמת. "איך בין איין אמתער סר מרע" עוד שמעתי מהרב רבי נפתלי זכרונו לברכה, שפעם אחת שאלה אותו אמו למה אינו דוחק את עצמו לאכל קצת כי במה יחיה. והשיב לה, אני חי עכשו רק עם החכמה תחיה את בעליה (קהלת ז). ואמר לה עוד, יש אצלי אנשים כאלו שיודעים דברים כאלו שיכולים לחיות בהם בלא אכילה ושתיה (פשוט דרצונו לומר אפלו אם יאכלו מעט דמעט בתכלית הצמצום יכולים לחיות בזה, כי עקר חיותם הוא ממזון רוחני וכמובא גם בזהר הקדוש (ויקרא שא:):

(9.) Said the transcriber: I heard that once his righteous mother of blessed memory pressed him — since the world praises him and says such great things about him — that he should tell her also what his level is in the service of G-d. He replied to her: "What shall I tell you — I am truly one who turns away from evil" [in Yiddish: "ich bin ain emeter sar merah"].
I also heard from the Rabbi Rabbi Naftali of blessed memory that once his mother asked him why he does not press himself to eat a little, for what will he live on? And he replied to her: "I am now living only with 'wisdom revives its possessors' [Ecclesiastes 7]." And he further said to her: "I have people like this who know such things that they can live on them without eating and drinking."
