תּוֹרָה קעט - גֹּדֶל מַעֲלַת הַתַּעֲנִית א. תַּעֲנִית מְבַטֵּל מַחֲלֹקֶת בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וּבְרוּחָנִיּוּת. כִּי כְּשֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְהִתְפַּלֵּל אוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת מַה שֶּׁצָּרִיךְ בַּעֲבוֹדַת ה', זֶּה גַּם כֵּן בִּכְלַל מַחֲלֹקֶת. וְהַתַּעֲנִית מוֹעִיל לָזֶה לְהַכְנִיעַ הַלֵּב לִדָּבֵק בְּהַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא וְלַעֲשׂוֹת שָׁלוֹם: ב. הַתַּעֲנִית מְחַיֶּה מֵתִים, הַיְנוּ שֶׁמְּחַיֶּה הַיָּמִים שֶׁעָבְרוּ בַּחֹשֶׁךְ וְאֵין לָהֶם שׁוּם חִיּוּת, כִּי מִי שֶׁפּוֹגֵם אֵיזֶה יוֹם שֶׁאֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה בּוֹ מִצְווֹת וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים, וּמִכָּל שֶׁכֵּן כְּשֶׁעוֹשֶׂה בּוֹ רַע חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, אָז אֵין לְאוֹתוֹ הַיּוֹם חִיּוּת, וְהוּא מֵמִית אוֹתוֹ הַיּוֹם (עַיֵּן פְּנִים), וְהַתַּעֲנִית מְחַיֶּה הַיָּמִים הַמֵּתִים הַלָּלוּ, וְהַכֹּל לְפִי הַתַּעֲנִית, וְכָל מַה שֶּׁמִּתְעַנֶּה יוֹתֵר, כֵּן הוּא מְחַיֶּה יוֹתֵר יָמִים מֵתִים שֶׁעָבְרוּ בַּחֹשֶךְ: ג. עַל־יְדֵי הַתַּעֲנִית זוֹכִין לְשִׂמְחָה, וּכְפִי יְמֵי הַתַּעֲנִית כֵּן זוֹכִין לְשִׂמְחָה:
A fast nullifies conflict — in physicality and in spirituality. For when one cannot pray or do what is needed in the service of Hashem — this too is included in the category of conflict. And the fast helps in this — to subdue the heart to cleave to the Holy One, blessed be He — and to make peace. The fast revives the dead — that is, it revives the days that passed in darkness and have no vitality. For one who blemishes some day — not performing commandments and good deeds in it — and all the more so if one does evil in it — G-d forbid — then that day has no vitality — and one kills that day (see the main text). And the fast revives those dead days. And everything is proportional to the fast — and the more one fasts — the more dead days that passed in darkness are revived. Through fasting one merits to joy. And proportional to the days of fasting — so is the joy one merits.
