הַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת הַבָּאִים בִּשְׁעַת הַתְּפִלָּה, בִּפְרָט אֵצֶל הָאָדָם הַצַּדִּיק שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְהִתְפַּלֵּל בִּדְבֵקוּת גָּדוֹל, הֵם מֵהַנִּיצוֹצוֹת הַקְּדוֹשִׁים שֶׁנָּפְלוּ בִּשְׁעַת שְׁבִירַת כֵּלִים, וְהַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹת זָרוֹת הֵם אֵצֶל כָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד מֵעֵין אוֹתָהּ הַמִּדָּה וְהַמַּדְרֵגָה שֶׁהוּא עוֹמֵד בָּהּ עַתָּה, וְהַצַּדִּיק צָרִיךְ לֵידַע מֵאֵיזֶה עוֹלָם וּמֵאֵיזֶה מִדָּה הִיא הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה הַזָּרָה הַזֹּאת, וְגַם צָרִיךְ לֵידַע בַּמֶּה לְהַעֲלוֹתָהּ לְאוֹתוֹ עוֹלָם וְהַמִּדָּה שֶׁהוּא בָּהּ עַתָּה, אַךְ לִפְעָמִים הַצַּדִּיק רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲלוֹתָהּ וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל, זֶה מֵחֲמַת כִּי הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה הַזֹּאת הִיא מִבְּחִינַת מַדְרֵגָה עֶלְיוֹנָה שֶׁלֹּא בָּא עֲדַיִן הַצַּדִּיק לְמַדְרֵגָה זֹאת, וְעַל־כֵּן אִי אֶפְשָׁר לוֹ לְהַעֲלוֹתָהּ, אַךְ מֵאַיִן בָּא זֹאת שֶׁתָּבוֹא לוֹ מַחֲשָׁבָה זָרָה קֹדֶם זְמַנָּהּ, זֶה מֵחֲמַת כִּי כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ מַחֲלֹקֶת עַל אֵיזֶה צַדִּיק, אָז נוֹפֵל מַחֲשָׁבָה זָרָה מֵעֵין אוֹתוֹ הַמַּחֲלֹקֶת לְצַדִּיק אַחֵר, וּמֵחֲמַת שֶׁהַצַּדִּיק רוֹצֶה לְהַעֲלוֹתָהּ, אַף־עַל־פִּי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַעֲלֶה אוֹתָהּ, מְשַׁבֵּר בְּכֹחַ הָרָצוֹן כָּל בַּעֲלֵי הַמַּחֲלֹקֶת:
The alien thoughts that come during prayer — in particular for the righteous person who wishes to pray with great attachment [d'veikus] — are from the holy sparks that fell at the time of the shattering of the vessels. And the alien thoughts are in every person in accordance with the particular attribute and level at which he currently stands. And the Tzadik must know from which world and from which attribute this alien thought comes — and must also know with what to elevate it to that world and attribute where he currently stands. But sometimes the Tzadik wishes to elevate it and cannot — because this thought is from a higher level that the Tzadik has not yet reached. And how does a thought that is not yet his time come to him? — Because when there is conflict against some Tzadik — an alien thought corresponding to that conflict falls upon another Tzadik. And even though the Tzadik cannot elevate it — through his desire to elevate it — through the power of the will alone — he breaks all those who spread the conflict.
