LM א׳ ריד׳ — "בדורות הראשונים כשידעו יום מיתתם היו עוסקים בתורה כל היום — ולא היה שליטה למקטרג".

In the earlier generations, people knew the day of their death. This knowledge was a tremendous gift — it freed them to spend every day in total Torah immersion, because they understood exactly how much time they had. When you know the end is coming, time becomes precious beyond measure. The result was that the accuser had no dominion over them — pure Torah occupation left no opening for spiritual prosecution. Today we do not know our death day, but Rebbe Nachman implies we should live as if we did — with full urgency in Torah.
