T73 (Tinyana) PNC - Mi She-Rotzeh Lizkos LiTeshuvah Yihiyeh Ragil B'Amiras Tehillim — 49 Sha'arei Teshuvah, the Letters of the Shevatim, and the Sofei Teivos of Bereshis-Shemos
Petek Nanach Running Commentary on Likutey Moharan
**"Mi she-rotzeh lizkos li-teshuvah, yihiyeh ragil ba-amiras Tehillim — ki amiras Tehillim mesugal li-teshuvah."** Rabbeinu opens flatly with one of his most operative practical *segulos*: if you want to merit teshuvah, become *ragil* — accustomed, habitual — in saying Tehillim. **Why a *segulah* is even needed**: there are *nun sha'arei teshuvah*, fifty gates of teshuvah. Of these, **49 are accessible to humans**; the 50th is *bechinas the teshuvah of HaShem Himself, kivyachol* — bechinas **"שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי וְאָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם"** (Malachi 3:7), even He yisbarach has a *teshuvah*-bechinah, the answering motion that meets ours. **The 49 gates are the 49 letters in the names of the 12 tribes of Yah** — count them across *Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehudah, Dan, Naftali, Gad, Asher, Yissachar, Zevulun, Yosef, Binyamin*; they sum to 49. Each gate has its own letter. Now Rabbeinu names the *three independent failure-modes* that block teshuvah even from those who want it: **(1)** *yesh echad she-ein lo hisorerus klal* — many people simply have no inner-arousal toward teshuvah at all. **(2)** Even if you DO have hisorerus, *eino zocheh l'hagi'a el ha-os v'ha-shaar shel teshuvah ha-shayach lo* — you can't find *your* gate, the one keyed to your specific letter. **(3)** Even if you reach it, *yachol li-hyos she-ha-shaar shel teshuvah sagur* — your gate may be closed. Three doors and you might fail at any of them. **And what Tehillim does is fix all three**: *afilu mi she-ein lo shum hisorerus li-teshuvah, hu mis'orer la'asos teshuvah*, AND it brings him *to the gate and letter that belongs to him*, AND it *opens that very gate*. One sefer, three breaches, all walked through.
**Why specifically Tehillim**: David HaMelech is the *m'lameid teshuvah la-yachid* — the teacher of teshuvah for the individual. **Avodah Zarah 4b**: *lo hayah David ra'uy l'oso ma'aseh, ela kdei l'horos teshuvah la-yachid* — David was not really *fitting* for the act with Bas-Sheva, except so that he would model *teshuvas ha-yachid*, the teshuvah of the single person who has fallen. So the *ikkur* of teaching-teshuvah comes through David HaMelech. And **the ikkur of David's teshuvah is Sefer Tehillim itself** — said *b'hisorerus gadol me'od u'b'ruach ha-kodesh*, *with great inner-arousal and ruach ha-kodesh*, until each and every person, *k'fi mah she-hu yachol*, can *find himself* inside the words of Tehillim. **Shmuel II 23:1** "נְאֻם הַגֶּבֶר הֻקַם עָל, וּנְעִים זְמִרוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל" — Moed Katan 16b: *she-heikim ulah shel teshuvah*, he raised up the *ol*, the yoke, of teshuvah. *N'im zemiros Yisrael* — the sweet one of Yisrael's songs — IS the operator that raised the yoke. So when you sit and say Tehillim, you are entering the sefer that was generated *out of teshuvas ha-yachid*, the sefer in which any single person can locate his exact position and his exact gate. Each pasuk is keyed to a different letter, a different shaar, a different Jew at his exact moment. **You are not davening** *l'galmaiah* — you are *l'sebach yourself ba-mefa'er*, finding your own letter inside the lattice of 49 that the 12 shevatim laid down.
**The cosmic schedule**: where do these 49 letters come from, and why specifically the names of the shevatim? Rabbeinu lifts the geography to the seder of yetzias Mitzrayim and Matan Torah. **The ikkur hizdakchus of the 12 shivtei Yah — the 49 letters = 49 sha'arei teshuvah — was *in Mitzrayim itself***. Mitzrayim is *meitzar ha-garon* (the constriction of the throat), which the Arizal teaches is *bechinas teshuvah ila'ah* — the supernal teshuvah, the constriction-of-self that makes the higher-teshuvah-flow possible. **Therefore**: after the shivtei Yah were *purified there* and merited to leave, they counted *49 days of Sefirah* — *kneged the 49 sha'arei teshuvah* = the 49 letters they had just been refined into. **And on the 50th day** — the day no human can on his own attain — *az* **"וַיֵּרֶד ה' עַל הַר סִינָי"** (Shemos 19:20). HaShem yisbarach Himself *descended* — that is *bechinas "v'ashuvah aleichem"*, the 50th gate, the teshuvah of HKBH meeting ours. The structure of *omer* and *mattan Torah* IS the structure of teshuvah: count up 49 from Mitzrayim's meitzar, and on the 50th, He comes down to meet you. **Closing — the sofei teivos that hold it all**: "וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה אֵת יַעֲקֹב אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ" (Shemos 1:1) — the *sofei teivos* of these ten words contain *both* sets of letters: **תְּהִלִּים** AND **תְּשׁוּבָה**. Reading the last letter of each word in order: ה־ת־י־ל־ם־ה־ת־ב־ש־ו — and the letters of *תהלים* (ת, ה, ל, י, ם) and *תשובה* (ת, ש, ו, ב, ה) are both fully present. The *very pasuk* that opens Sefer Shemos — that begins the descent into the meitzar — names the two operators of escape from it: Tehillim and Teshuvah, *side by side in the sofei teivos*. The whole descent of the shevatim into Egypt was for the sake of the 49-letter purification that produces these two names. **The take-home of the torah**: when life closes in on you and the gate of teshuvah feels distant or shut, *open the Tehillim*. The sefer was written precisely for the yachid in this position. The shaar that is yours has a letter; that letter is sitting somewhere in the sefer, and David's hisorerus is waiting in those words to be your hisorerus.
