"And for all the mighty hand and for all the great awe which Moshe did before the eyes of all Israel." [Devarim 34:12]

Hope in Exile — The Mighty Hand; Causing Awe to Descend on the Nations

"The mighty hand" — this is the strength of Israel's faith — for they constantly hope in exile. As it is said of them: "I waited and waited for Hashem and He turned to me" [Tehillim 40:2]. What is "He turned to me"? — Because He is distant — therefore one must extend His ear. And Dani'el prayed: "incline, my G-d, Your ear" [Dani'el 9:18]. Then: "and He heard my cry" — even in exile. But in the time when the redemption draws close — He is near and this is not needed.

And one who hopes for the Holy One in exile — causes those levels that are distant to draw near — and illuminates the Shechina in the darkness. Therefore one must every day await the redemption. The mystery: "hope to Hashem — be strong and let your heart be courageous..." [Tehillim 27:14]. And the mystery: one who hopes causes the supernal light to draw near to him — and then he is strengthened still more in holiness. Therefore: kaveh [hope] — then: chazak [be strong]. And then you can hope still more. But one who does not hope first — does not hope thereafter either. And Moshe strengthened the Tikun for Israel so that they would be strengthened in this hoping — and not abandon it.

"The great awe" — as it is said: "great is the Shepherd Who saves them" — to place fear upon the nations of the world. And one who awaits the redemption causes the light to strengthen more — and causes greater fear to fall upon the nations of the world. Therefore these matters are joined together: "the mighty hand and the great awe which Moshe did" — for all Israel he did them truly.
