And the genizah was in the yeshivah. I entered the yeshivah and went to the genizah to throw the book in. But before I threw the book — I saw that the name of the book was "Hishtapchus HaNefesh" — "The Outpouring of the Soul."

[I don't understand — was this a book called 'Shemos' or 'Hishtapchus HaNefesh'?] Ah? [Was this 'Shemos,' 'Shemos'?] No. [Not a book with names.] No — it is called 'shemos' — without a cover. And I prayed as it was written there, in the name of Rabbainu — how to do hisbodedus and how to pray. And I went out into the fields. No one knew — like a thief. I stole myself away into the fields. And I had hisbodedus and I read in the book and I fulfilled what was written there. And I saw for the first time in my life — the power of this book, the power of hisbodedus — it kills all the destroyers, all the harmful forces, all kinds of disputes, all kinds of acts, all kinds of desires. I saw it eye to eye — that after the hisbodedus, when I returned to the yeshivah, I was like a new person. I felt within myself: "Where are all — all — all the destroyers? They were killed!" So I — I had this practice almost every day — to go out to the field, to the field with the book. And I had hisbodedus. And I saw new miracles and wonders — such as from the day I came to my senses I had never seen such wonders. This went on for a period of time. Once I was reading inside the book — and I did not know from whom this was, from what… who, who was the author of the book. Because it was without a foreword, without a beginning, without an end. And I did not know. And I kept the book — I locked it inside my box. And almost every day I went to the field with the book. And I saw great wonders — such as I had never had, and I did not know from whom this book was.

Once I was reading the book in my room — and a friend came to me. {To say the name?} [No — a friend.] No — a friend, a friend from the Chassidim of Karlin. [Yoy.] And he saw that I was reading with great awakening in the book. So he saw that the book — he saw that this was "Hishtapchus HaNefesh" — and he knew that this was from the books of Breslov. I heard — for the first time in my life — that there is a Breslov in the world and that it is forbidden to read these books. So I said to him: "I do not listen to the whole world, to all the Admo"rim. This book is good for me — I have seen such wonders as are impossible to tell." So he said to me: "You are such an insolent one — such brazenness — against the Admo"r and against all the Admo"rim — so you are not a human being." I said to him: "For me this is good!" So he said to me: "This book is mine — I want the book." I did not want to give it to him. I said to him: "I acquired it from ownerless property — from the garbage bin." So he said it was his — and I said it was mine — and he overpowered me and took the book from me by force.

And I was left without the book. But I heard that there is a chassidus in the world called "Breslov." So I — I was left without the book. But I continued to do hisbodedus. And I prayed to the Holy One Blessed Be He that He have compassion on me — as He had begun to help me and I found this book — and I know what, what, what — what, what, what, what this worked upon me. So I asked from the Holy One Blessed Be He that He send me Breslov books and Breslov Chassidim. (Saba laughs.)

I was in Teveria and had not left Teveria. I did not know — Tzfas was close to Teveria. And everyone travels to Meron — as in Elul, on Lag BaOmer. And I was poor — I had no money. I did not travel to Tzfas. If I had traveled to Tzfas, I would have known perhaps — in Tzfas there were Breslov Chassidim. But no — I did not know about Breslov Chassidim. I asked from the Holy One Blessed Be He that He send me Breslov Chassidim. I thought: perhaps in Yerushalayim — perhaps somewhere in the world there are Breslov Chassidim. So I asked. And this… much time passed. And the Holy One Blessed Be He accepted my prayer and sent me to Teveria — Rebbe Yisroel Kardonner. He did not want to move from Meron.

[Who did not want to move from Meron?] Rebbe Yisroel Kardonner. [Ah, ah.] What did the Holy One Blessed Be He do? He sent him an illness on his hand — on one hand. And the pains were so great that in the natural order of things it was impossible to bear such pains. And he was not able to say Chatzos or to pray or to study. Rachmanus. So Rebbe Yisroel did not regard this as the world regards — as chance. Rather he — he knew with complete faith that this was from the Holy One Blessed Be He. And he began to think: "Perhaps it is the will of the Holy One Blessed Be He that he should travel to Teveria — because in Teveria the cold is not so great — not so great is the cold — and so the illness would not hurt him so much, would not hurt him — he would not have such great pains and he would be able to serve the Holy One Blessed Be He."

But he was in doubt — he did not know clearly that he needed to… that it was the will of the Creator that he go to Teveria. So he did not want to move. Even though… But he saw that the pains were intensifying each time more, and it was impossible for him. So he did much hisbodedus and prayed much to the Holy One Blessed Be He — that He illuminate his mind with a complete — a complete clarification — whether it is the will of the Holy One Blessed Be He that he travel to Teveria — that he should know clearly that he should go to Teveria. So he did much hisbodedus over this and prayed much over this. And after all of these, he opened the book Likutay Halachos and found in it that it was the will of the Creator Blessed Be He that he travel to Teveria.

[On what page did he open the book?] Ah? [On what page did he open the book?] I do not know — he did not tell me. [As a hint — it is not written there explicitly that he should travel to Teveria — as a hint.] Yes. The book was — this — this — this I know: the book was the Yorah De'ah from the first printing of — of Rebbe Nassan. So since he now knew clearly that it was the will of the Creator to go to Teveria — he rose early in the morning and went on Thursday to Teveria. Ah — at the very hour that Rebbe Yisroel came — came on Thursday to Teveria — at that very hour — on Sunday we had begun baking bread for sale. Because — because our livelihood was grinding coffee. And then it was wartime. So — so… [There was no coffee.] There was no coffee — and we had nothing — nothing at all for — for a livelihood. So our relative — a family relation — Rav Binyamin Barzal.

But who would give us even — even one kilogram of bread — [flour] — flour to bake bread? Because everyone knew that we were poor. So she went to the rabbi — Rav Binyamin Barzal — and he said to her: "No — do not fear. I will tell the flour dealer to give you a sack — two sacks — however much flour you need." And he (Rebbe Yisroel Kardonner) came that week on Thursday. And there was a need for bread for the eve — for the evening meal. And when he descended from the donkey, he was — he needed bread to eat. So he met [Binyamin Barzal] — Rav Binyamin Barzal — and asked him to show him where to buy a loaf of bread. Rav Binyamin Barzal — he knew everything — knew that we had started baking bread. So he brought him to us. And I… And the Holy One Blessed Be He arranged the circumstance that I took out… We were five brothers in the house — and it was almost — almost all of them were older than me. And it was Providence that I took the loaf of bread and brought it out and gave it to Rebbe Yisroel.

When I saw Rebbe Yisroel — his form — I thought: this man is a hidden tzaddik and with him I will find what I am searching for — emunah and yiras Shamayim and… I thought this. And he put his hand into his pocket and took out money — to pay me for the bread. And I was thinking this. So he said — he gave me the money and said to me: "Perhaps it is possible to eat the bread at your home?" So I saw… so I felt that he knew my thoughts and my wishes — that I wanted to have a connection with him. But I saw that this was a distant thing — because the father would not agree to it — not because he didn't want to — not because he doesn't — doesn't want it. Because on Thursday evening we already need to bake challah and bread and… And we need to make the night and sleep. And also the house is small and we have no place for a guest to… to eat. And we need to make the night — to lie down and… And he would despise me: "What kind of question are you asking?"

So I — but I — for the sake of… Because I wanted to have a connection with Rebbe Yisroel, I strengthened myself with all my might and said — and said: "Whatever will be — even if he strikes me and despises me — I will ask the father — whatever will be." So I asked, and the father answered: "Yes, yes — there is a portion left — a little cooked food remains from the meal. So give it to him. Bread alone — he — will he eat bread alone? Then give it to him." So already I saw that this was Providence from the Holy One Blessed Be He — beyond nature — that I should have a connection with this holy tzaddik.

And so it was. They made the night — they said Birkas HaMazon and Krias Shema and they lay down to sleep. And I — and Rebbe Yisroel sat on — on — on a step — one step of the house. And I gave him bread to eat. Yes. And he performed the washing of hands and made the blessing of "HaMotzi…" And when I heard the blessing from him — "al netillas yadayim" and "HaMotzi…" — I saw that this is right — this is a hidden tzaddik. Because such a blessing I had never heard — had never heard. I grew up among Chassidim and they — and they learn Torah and are yiray Hashem. But such a blessing I had not heard. And also a face — such a form as Rebbe Yisroel had — I had not seen, had not seen.

So I said to him softly — in secret — in his ear: "Rebbe Yisroel… I did not know — 'You should know that you have come to Teveria for my sake. I am such and such — I want very much to serve Hashem in truth. And there have been upon me, and there are upon me, very hard battles. And I am searching — all my life I am searching for a place where they will guide me and illuminate — illuminate within me the light — the light of Hashem — so that I merit to serve Hashem in truth. So you have come to Teveria for my sake — and I beg you: do not leave me!'"

And I — I saw that he was very moved. Because right when he descended from the donkey — the Holy One Blessed Be He had brought him to me and he heard such words. (Saba laughs.) He, he, he needed to travel earlier. But as long as he had no clarity — that he needed to travel to Teveria — he did not want to move from Meron. (Saba laughs.) Nu. Oy voy.

And also I saw with my own eyes Rebbe Yisroel — I saw what Breslov is. [What did you see? What?] I saw his prayer and his avodah and his Shabbos — his holy words, his desires — how he — what he suffered for me. What did he suffer? He came to Teveria and found Yisroel Ber — so he already forgot that he had a family in Tzfas, and that there was Meron. He threw everything aside — everything — only Yisroel Ber. (Saba laughs.) Oy voy — what — what — what… What happened — such an act — this, this is particular — this is a particular wonder as there is none — none like it. They built the synagogue close to the lake. And the lake — in winter when there were many rains — rose and entered this synagogue until — until half the tables. The lake was inside the synagogue and one could not pray there. And this synagogue was open — and the tables and chairs stood in the water until it went down — until… until the month of Nissan — until the waters went down.

So we entered this synagogue and climbed onto a table and studied Torah Zayin from Part Two: "Ki merachamam yenahalem" — "For He leads them with compassion." And he studied with me this Torah all night long. And I merited — all my life I had not felt the taste of Torah, the taste of yiras Shamayim, the taste of… as in that night when he studied with me this Torah — this holy Torah — "Ki merachamam yenahalem." Hey — we were in the synagogue with the lake within it — all night long. And I did not feel that… you need to sleep. [He had candles also in his bag.] And he also had candles and matches — which in those days was something precious. And he was wealthy — and he had candles. He lit a candle and studied with me from Likutay Moharan until close to the light of dawn.

Until I heard the sound of weeping of my mother — she was weeping greatly, as after a death. She wept greatly: "Oy — my son, my son — my son Yisroel Ber — my son Yisroel Ber is lost, is lost!" (Saba laughs.) And I heard it. So I said to Rebbe Yisroel (Kardonner): "Oy voy — it is already after midnight, after… and my mother is searching, is looking for me." So I went out of the synagogue and went to my mother — walking toward her voice. I reached her and said to her: "What is all this weeping?" So she said: "What have you done?
