בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁבָּא פַּחַד עַל רָשָׁע, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁבְּזֶה הַשָּׁעָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא נוֹתֵן לַצַּדִּיק תַּאֲוָתוֹ.
1. At the time that an evildoer becomes afraid, it is certain that, at this time, the Holy One Blessed be He grants the Tzadik his desire.
עַל־יְדֵי פַּחַד בָּא מִכְשׁוֹל.
2. Through fear comes stumbling.
עַל־יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן תִּנָּצֵל מִפַּחַד.
3. Through trust [in G-d], you will be saved from fear.
סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד, לִזְכֹּר אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ.
4. A segulah (effective way) to nullify fear is to remember our father Avraham.
בִּצְדָקָה תְּבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד.
5. With charity, you will nullify fear.
סְגֻלָּה לְבַטֵּל אֶת הַפַּחַד, שֶׁתֹּאמַר ה' צְבָאוֹת.
6. An effective way to nullify fear is to say "Hashem Tzva-os" (t.n. This is probably a reference to the verses in Psalms 46:8, 84:13 which begin with these words. These verses are found together throughout the prayers and are known for their saving powers – see Jerusalem Talmud, Tractate Brachos 5:1).
עַל־יְדֵי הַפַּחַד נִתְבַּטֵּל הַגַּאֲוָה.
7. Through fear, arrogance is nullified.
פַּחַד מַכְחִישׁ כֹּחוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם.
8. Fear saps a person's strength.
בַּר־דַּעַת אֵין לוֹ לְהִתְפַּחֵד מִפְּנֵי קוֹל בְּעָלְמָא.
9. An intelligent person has nothing to fear from a mere noise.
מָאן דְּמִבְעַת, אַף־עַל־גַּב דְּאִיהוּ לָא חָזֵי מַזָלֵהּ חָזֵי, וְתַקָּנָתוֹ, יְדַלֵּג מִדֻּכְתֵּהּ אַרְבַּע גַּרְמִידֵי אוֹ לִיקְרֵי קְרִיאַת־שְׁמַע אוֹ יֹאמַר עִזֵּי דְּבֵי טַבָּחָא שְׁמִינָא מִינָאִי.
10. Someone who becomes frightened, even though he does not see, his mazal (fortune) sees. To remedy this, he should jump from his place a distance of four cubits, or recite the Shema, or say, "the goats in the butcher shop are fatter than I".
מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ פְּחָדִים, יְזַמֵּר זֶמֶר שֶׁל שִׂמְחָה.
11. Someone who has fears should sing a song of joy.
עַל־יְדֵי שֶׁתְּצַיֵּר שֵׁם אֱלֹקִים לְנֶגֶד עֵינֶיךָ, יֵלְכוּ הַפְּחָדִים מִמְּךָ.
12. By picturing the name Elokim before your eyes, fears will leave you.
מִי שֶׁאוֹכֵל מָמוֹן יִשְׂרָאֵל, פְּחָדִים בָּאִין עָלָיו.
13. Someone who consumes Jewish money, fears come to him.
מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִזְהָר בְּבִרְכַּת הַנֶּהֱנִין תְּחִלָּה וָסוֹף, פְּחָדִים בָּאִים עָלָיו.
14. Someone who is not careful with the blessings at the beginning and end [of eating], fears come to him.
עַל־יְדֵי בִּטָּחוֹן לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ פַּחַד.
15. Through trust in [G-d], you will not have fear.
הוֹשַׁעְנוֹת חֲבוּטִים מְסֻגָּלִים לְבַטֵּל הַפַּחַד.
16. Willow branches beaten [on Hoshana Rabba] are conducive (a segula) to nullifying fear.
מִי שֶׁשּׁוֹמֵעַ וְאָצִית לְדִין תּוֹרָה, נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד.
17. One who listens to and obeys a Torah courts decision (Torah law) will be saved from fear.
שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וָעֶשֶׂר טְבִילוֹת מְבַטְּלִין הַפַּחַד. גַּם יִתֵּן מַתָּנָה לַצַּדִּיק.
18. Three hundred and ten immersions [in a mikveh - ritual bath] nullify fear. One should also give a gift to a Tzadik.
עַל־יְדֵי אֱמֶת הָאָדָם נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד בַּלֵּילוֹת.
19. Through truth, a person is saved from fear at night.
עַל־יְדֵי עֲנָוָה לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ פַּחַד.
20. Through humility, you will not have fear.
בַּיִת שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ פַּחַד, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ חֵלֶק לַסִּטְרָא־אַחֲרָא.
21. A house in which there is fear, it is certain that the Other Side has a portion in it.
כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ אֵיזֶה פַּחַד, וְאַחַר־כָּךְ בָּא שְׂרֵפָה, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁיִּתְבַּטֵל הַפַּחַד.
22. When there is some fear and, afterwards, a fire (burning) comes, it is certain that the fear will be annulled.
פַּחַד בָּא עַל־יְדֵי חֲנֻפָּה.
23. Fear comes through adulation.
כְּשֶׁיִּשְׂרָאֵל בְּאַחְדוּת, הָאֻמּוֹת מִתְפַּחֲדִין מֵהֶם.
24. When Israel is united, the nations fear them.
כְּשֶׁשּׁוֹכְחִים אֶת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְאֵינָם נִשְׁעָנִים עָלָיו, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה מִתְפַּחֲדִים מֵאֻמּוֹת.
25. When they forget Hashem, may He be Blessed, and do not rely on him, through this, they fear the nations.
עַל־יְדֵי דְּאָגָה בָּא פַּחַד.
26. Through worry comes fear.
עַל־יְדֵי פַּחַד בָּא כְּזָבִים.
27. Through fear comes lies.
אוֹר הַנֵּר – סְגֻלָּה לְפַחַד.
28. The light of a candle is a remedy (segulah) for fear.
עַל־יְדֵי הִתְפָּאֲרוּת בַּעֲשִׁירוּת בָּא פַּחַד.
29. Through boasting of wealth, comes fear.
פַּחַד בָּא עַל־יְדֵי כַּעַס.
30. Fear comes through anger.
עַל־יְדֵי דְּאָגָה וָפַחַד נַעֲשָׂה הַלֵּב אָטוּם.
31. Through worry and fear, the heart becomes sealed (insensitive).
עַל־יְדֵי לִמּוּד תּוֹרָה עַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן בִּשְׁעַת סְעוּדָה נִצּוֹל מִפַּחַד.
32. By learning Torah at the table at mealtime, one is saved from fear.
מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ פַּחַד, הוּא סִימָן שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא הִסְתִּיר פָּנִים מִמֶּנּוּ, וְסִימָן שֶׁדִּינִין שׁוֹרִין עָלָיו.
33. Someone who has fear - this is a sign that the Holy One, Blessed be He, hides His Face from him, and a sign that judgments rest on him.
מִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מִתְוַדֶּה עַל עֲווֹנוֹתָיו, מוֹרָא בָּא עָלָיו.
34. One who does not confess his sins - fear comes to him.
כְּשֶׁבָּא פַּחַד עַל אָדָם, יֵדַע שֶׁבָּא בֶּן גִּילוֹ לְאֵיזֶהוּ צָרָה.
1. When fear comes to a person, he should know that someone who shares his mazal (fortune) has come into some trouble.
לִפְעָמִים אָדָם מִתְפַּחֵד קֹדֶם שֶׁבָּא עָלָיו אֵיזֶהוּ טוֹב.
2. Sometimes a person becomes afraid before some good comes to him.
מִי שֶׁבּוֹרֵחַ מִן הַצָּרָה, הוּא פִּקֵּחַ.
3. Someone who flees from trouble is smart.
בְּלַיְלָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ לְךָ פַּחַד בִּשְׁעַת שֵׁנָה, אַל תֵּלֵךְ בַּדֶּרֶךְ בַּיּוֹם.
4. On a night that you have fear while sleeping, do not go on the road in the day.
כְּשֶׁאָדָם נוֹטֶה לָמוּת, אֲפִלּוּ כְּשֶׁעֲדַיִן בְּקַו־הַבְּרִיאָה וְאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁדִּינוֹ לְמִיתָה, אַף־עַל־פִּי־כֵן הוּא מִתְפַּחֵד וְאוֹמֵר בְּפִיו שֶׁיָּמוּת.
5. When a person is on the verge of death, even if he is still healthy and does not know of his death sentence, nonetheless, he becomes afraid and says verbally that he will die.
