עַל־יְדֵי גַבְהוּת הַלֵּב נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה.

1. Through haughtiness of the heart, one falls into incarceration.

דְּמוֹדֶה לְנָכְרִים נוֹפֵל בִּידֵיהוֹן, אֶלָּא כָּל דִּבְרֵיהֶם תִּסְתֹּר.

2. One who agrees with the non-Jews falls into their hands. Rather, one should contradict all of their words.

הָאוֹמֵר דָּבָר בְּשֵׁם אוֹמְרוֹ, מֵבִיא גְּאֻלָּה לָעוֹלָם.

3. Someone who says a statement in the name of the one who said it (originator), brings redemption to the world.

עַל־יְדֵי פִּדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים נִתְקַבֵּץ נִדָּחָיו שֶׁל הַפּוֹדֶה.

בַּעֲווֹן מִשְׁכַּב־זָכָר נִתְפָּס בִּתְפִיסָה.

מִי שֶׁמְּרַחֵם עַל הַשְּׁבוּיִים, הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא מַצִּילוֹ מִמִּיתָה.

7. Someone who has mercy on prisoners, the Holy One, Blessed be He, saves him from death.

מִי שֶׁהוּא בִּתְפִיסָה, בְּיָדוּעַ שֶׁגַּם נִשְׁמָתוֹ לְמַעְלָה בִּתְפִיסָה.

8. Someone who is incarcerated, it is certain that his soul above is also incarcerated.

מִי שֶׁבָּא לַצַּדִּיק וְשׁוֹאֵל אֶת הַצַּדִּיק עֵצָה וּמֵפֵר עֲצָתוֹ אַחַר־כָּךְ, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה נִתְפָּס בִּתְפִיסָה.

9. Someone who comes to the Tzadik and asks the Tzadik advice, and afterwards violates his advice, as a result, he becomes incarcerated.

מִי שֶׁמַּאֲכִיל לֶחֶם לָרְעֵבִים, הַקָּדוֹשׁ־בָּרוּךְ־הוּא מַצִּיל אוֹתוֹ מִבֵּית־הָאֲסוּרִים.

10. One who feeds bread to the hungry, the Holy One, Blessed be He, saves him from the jailhouse.

מִי שֶׁלֹּא תִּקֵּן חַטְּאוֹת נְעוּרִים, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה בָּא לְבֵית־הָאֲסוּרִים.

11. One who did not fix the sins of his youth, as a result, he goes to the jail house.

מִי שֶׁהוּא רָגִיל לִהְיוֹת מוֹהֵל, אוֹ לְסַפֵּק צָרְכֵי סְעוּדַת בְּרִית־מִילָה שֶׁל עָנִי, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה נִצּוֹל מִבֵּית־הָאֲסוּרִים.

12. Someone who is accustomed to performing circumcisions, or providing for the expenses of the circumcision feast for a poor person, through this, he is saved from the jail house.

II-1

עַל־יְדֵי נִאוּף נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה אוֹ לְחֳלִי כְּאֵב רַגְלַיִם. גַּם תַּלְמִיד שֶׁלֹּא הִגִּיעַ לְהוֹרָאָה וּמוֹרֶה, נוֹפֵל לָזֶה, גַּם מַזִּיקִין שׁוֹלְטִין עָלָיו.

1. Through lewdness, one falls into incarceration or foot pain sickness. Also, a student who had not reached the level of delivering a halachic directive, yet prescribes, falls into this. Also, damaging spirits rule over (afflict) him.

סְגֻלַּת הַצְּדָקָה לְבַטֵּל כָּל אֵלּוּ הָעֳנָשִׁים.

2. Charity is a segulah (conductive) to nullifying all of those punishments.

בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁאֵין מְבַקְשִׁין רַחֲמִים עַל חֲבֵרוֹ, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה, וְתִקּוּן לִתְפִיסָה, שֶׁיְּפַרְנֵס אֵיזֶהוּ בַּעֲלֵי־חַיִּים.

3. Due to not requesting compassion on behalf of one's friend, as a result, one falls into incarceration. And a remedy for incarceration is to support some living creature.

עַל־יְדֵי תַּשְׁמִישׁ הַמִּטָּה בְּיָמִים שֶׁאֲסוּרִין בְּתַשְׁמִישׁ, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה נוֹפֵל לִתְפִיסָה.

4. Through having marital relations on days on which such relations are forbidden, through this one falls into incarceration.

כְּשֶׁאֶחָד מִבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל נִתְפַּס בִּתְפִיסָה, עַל־יְדֵי זֶה לְפִי בְּחִינָתוֹ נִסְתְּמוּ מַעַיְנוֹת הַחָכְמָה מֵחַכְמֵי הַדּוֹר, וּלְהֵפֶךְ כְּשֶׁיוֹצֵא מֵהַתְּפִיסָה.

5. When one of the children of Israel falls into incarceration, as a result, according to his aspect, the wellsprings of wisdom are sealed up from the wise of the generation, and the opposite is true when he is freed from incarceration.

לִפְעָמִים עַל־יְדֵי תְּפִיסָה נִצּוֹל מִכִּלְיוֹן בָּנִים.

6. Sometimes, through incarceration, one is saved from loss of children.

עַל־יְדֵי לָשׁוֹן הָרָע נִתְפָּס בִּתְפִיסָה.

7. Through lushon hura (slander), one becomes incarcerated.

הַשְּׂעָרוֹת שֶׁגְּדֵלִין עַל הָאָדָם וְהַמַּלְבּוּשִׁים שֶׁעַל הָאָדָם בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיּוֹשֵׁב בִּתְפִיסָה, שׁוֹרֶה עֲלֵיהֶם רוּחַ מְכֹעָר, שֶׁעוֹכֵר וּמְבַזֶּה אֶת הָאָדָם.

8. The hairs that grow on a person and the clothes on a person at the time that he sits in captivity, an ugly spirit rests upon them which makes a person ugly and degraded.

הִשְׁתַּדְּלוּת בְּפִדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים מְסֻגָּל לְהוֹלָדָה.

9. Making an effort to free prisoners is a segulah (conducive) for child-bearing.

מִי שֶׁעוֹסֵק בְּפִדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים, גְּדוֹלֵי הַדּוֹר נִכְלָלִים בּוֹ עַל־יְדֵי זֶה.

10. Someone who is involved in freeing prisoners, through this, the great ones of the generation are included in him.
