וְהִנֵּה בָּאתִי בְּאֵיזֶה יוֹם לְבֵית רַבִּי צְבִי הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל, וְרָאִיתִי עָנִי אֶחָד הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל, וְהִכַּרְתִּי בּוֹ שֶׁהוּא מֵהָאֲנָשִׁים הַגֵּרִים הָרוֹצִים לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִתְחַלְתִּי לְדַבֵּר עִמּוֹ וְהוֹדָה לִי שֶׁהוּא רוֹצֶה לִסַּע לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְשָׁאַלְתִּי אוֹתוֹ אוּלַי יֵשׁ בְּכָאן עוֹד אֵיזֶה אֲנָשִׁים אֲמִידִים הָרוֹצִים לִסַּע לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵשִׁיב הֲלא יֵשׁ בְּכָאן רַבִּי יוֹסֵף פְרַנְצוֹיז מִטּוֹרְנוֹפָּאל שֶׁיּוֹשֵׁב בְּכָאן זְמַן רַב עִם אִשְׁתּוֹ וּבְנוֹ וְהוּא עָשִׁיר גָּדוֹל
After Shabbas — on Sunday — Parshas Terumah — I greatly rebuked one person about what I had heard of him — that he had made a scheme to travel and so on — against the wishes of Rabbi Yudil may his light shine. And about this matter I also spoke afterward with other young men. And had I come only for this — it would still have been worthwhile to travel. And it is impossible to explain everything here.
וְתֵכֶף הוֹלִיךְ אוֹתָנוּ לָאַכְסַנְיָא שֶׁלּוֹ, וּמְצָאתִיו שׁוֹכֵב עַל מִטָּתוֹ מִשֵּׁנַת הַצָּהֳרַיִם, אֲבָל לא הָיָה יָשֵׁן וְנִכְנַסְתִּי אֵלָיו וְהִתְחַלְתִּי לְדַבֵּר עִמּוֹ, וְתֵכֶף הִתְחִיל לְסַפֵּר לִי מִגּדֶל הַסַּכָּנָה הָעֲצוּמָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ עַכְשָׁו חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, וְשֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לִנְסֹעַ עַכְשָׁו וְאָמַר שֶׁזֶּה סָמוּךְ מְאד הִגִּיעַ לוֹ כַּמָּה אִגְּרוֹת מִשָּׁם שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לֵילֵךְ עַל הַיָּם הַלָּבָן וּבְתוֹךְ כָּךְ סִפֵּר לִי אֵיךְ הַגְּרֶעק יִמַּח שְׁמוֹ חָזָק מְאד, וְשֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ מְדִינוֹת רַבּוֹת שֶׁאֵין אָנוּ יוֹדְעִים מֵהֶם, וְהוּא יוֹשֵׁב שָׁם וְלוֹחֵם מִלְחָמוֹת חֲזָקוֹת עִם הַיִּשְׁמָעֵאל, וּמֵחֲמַת זֶה אִי אֶפְשָׁר לִנְסֹעַ עַכְשָׁו וּבִתְחִלָּה הֶחְלִישׁ דַּעְתִּי קְצָת, אֲבָל תֵּכֶף אָמַרְתִּי בְּלִבִּי שֶׁגַּם זֶה הוּא רַק מְנִיעָה שֶׁבָּאָה בִּשְׁבִיל הַחֵשֶׁק, כַּמְבאָר לְעֵיל וְגַם סִפֵּר לִי שֶׁהוּא מוֹנֵעַ וּמְעַכֵּב הַרְבֵּה אֲנָשִׁים שֶׁבָּאוּ לְכָאן שֶׁלּא יִסְעוּ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְרָאִיתִי תֵּכֶף שֶׁהוּא שְׁלִיחַ הַבַּעַל דָּבָר לְעַכֵּב מֵאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְנִפְטַרְתִּי מִמֶּנּוּ מֵאָז וָהָלְאָה לא רָצִיתִי עוֹד לִשְׁאל כְּלָל עַל הַנּוֹסְעִים לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁלּא יַחֲלִישׁוּ דַּעְתִּי חַס וְשָׁלוֹם גַּם אַנְשֵׁי אָדֶעס הַמַּכִּירִים אוֹתִי, כֻּלָּם פֶּה אֶחָד שֶׁאֵין רָאוּי עַכְשָׁו לִנְסֹעַ לְאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִגּדֶל הַסַּכָּנָה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם וְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ חִזֵּק אֶת לְבָבִי לַעֲבר עַל כָּל זֶה וְלָשׂוּם מִבְטַחִי בְּהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ עַד שֶׁעֲזָרַנִי בְּרַחֲמָיו לִנְסֹעַ בְּחַסְדוֹ הַגָּדוֹל תְּהִלָּה לָאֵל גַּם הוֹדִיעוּ לִי בְּאָדֶעס שֶׁבְּסָמוּךְ קדֶם פֶּסַח יָבוֹאוּ מְשֻׁלָּחִים מִוִּילְנָא הַמְכֻנִּים פְּרוּשִׁים וְהָיִיתִי מְצַפֶּה שֶׁיָּבוֹאוּ, כִּי יָדַעְתִּי שֶׁהֵם יִסְעוּ בְּוַדַּאי אֲבָל לא בָּאוּ קדֶם פֶּסַח, וְאַחַר פֶּסַח בְּיוֹם רְבִיעִי הִזְמִין לִי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ הַסְּפִינָה הַנִּזְכֶּרֶת לְעֵיל, וְלא רָצִיתִי לְהַמְתִּין כְּלָל עַל הַמְשֻׁלָּחִים, וְשָׂכַרְתִּי הַסְּפִינָה מִיָּד שֶׁנִּסַּע אֲנַחְנוּ שְׁנֵינוּ לְבַד בְּהַסְּפִינָה שֶׁכֻּלָּם עֲרֵלִים וְגַם מֵעוֹלָם לא הָיִיתִי עַל סְפִינָה כְּלָל, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן חִבַּת קְדֻשַּׁת אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל הִתְגַבְּרָה עַל כָּל הַמְּנִיעוֹת בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם:
The night belonging to Monday — Rabbi Shmuel son of Rabbi Ber who lived in the village of Yupkovitz made a feast. And I and Rabbi Yudl traveled there. The young men he had not invited. And I spoke much with Rabbi Yudl on the road. And we ate the evening meal there. On Monday we returned to Medzibuizh. And I had intended immediately to return to Tcheirin. But I was compelled to wait for some people until Tuesday. On Tuesday I traveled from Medzibuizh to Tcheirin. And Rabbi Leib son of Rabbi Chaikl and other young men — and the son of Rabbi Eliyahu — escorted me to the village of Nobeselitz. And from there I wished to sleep the night in the village of Subituv. And we had already all traveled there. And we turned back from the middle of the river which had frozen overnight. And we came back and arrived at that village mentioned above — at Rabbi Avraham's house. And he made a great feast for us. And then I spoke much with the assembled who were there. Until in the course of our conversation we came into the Torah on the verse "Va'eschanan" [Likutay Tinyanna §78] — which speaks about simple people. And the main part of that Torah is about the way to Eretz Yisroel. And I said before them that entire Torah — explained well — according to what I know with Hashem's help — according to what I myself heard from his holy mouth. Which in writing it is impossible to explain so well. And I greatly enlivened them. And through this I was greatly aroused. And I saw that this too was a hint to me to travel to Eretz Yisroel. But even so my mind was not yet fully strengthened. For in Medzibuizh my intention had been to return home. And I also said before them then the Torah "HaNe'or Balaylah" [Likutay Moharan §52]. And through awakening the good and awesome fragrance of those two wondrous Torah teachings of Rabbainu zichrono livracha — a great joy was given to all our hearts. And we sat down afterward to the meal in joy. And we were joyful there. And all the young men greatly rejoiced with dances and circles — as is fitting to rejoice when one merits to hear such awesome things as the ear has never heard. On Wednesday morning Rabbi Avraham traveled with me to his brother's house in the village of Subituv. And the young men who had escorted me stayed at Rabbi Avraham's house. And we came to Rabbi Leib his brother in the village of Subituv. And we prayed there. And we ate the morning meal there. Afterward they gave me money with honor. And Rabbi Leib traveled with me as far as Tcheirin. And I returned and came to Tcheirin on Wednesday — Parshas Terumah — about midday. And behold — I had already dispatched with Hashem's help the journey to these surrounding communities. And I did not need to travel anywhere else — only to Kremintchoug. And behold — upon my arriving in Tcheirin a second time — the tossing about of the road already weighed heavily upon me. And I wished to return home. And the journey to Odessa and to come to Eretz Yisroel seemed very very far from me. Had it not been for the daughters of Rabbainu zichrono livracha — the righteous Marat Sarah who was living in Kremintchoug — and her righteous sister Marat Chaya may she live — and their children may they live — whom I was obligated to receive and to meet with them and to bring them greetings from their sister the righteous Marat Adl may she live — and I was obligated to serve and to attend to the descendants of Rabbainu zichrono livracha with all my strength — had it not been for this — I would have turned back from my journey. But I said: to Kremintchoug I must travel because of the above. For in the matter of money — the expense was almost greater than the gain. And I immediately hired a wagon on the condition of returning here. And I was not at all willing to hire a wagon one-way there — to travel from there with Rabbi Shlomo to Nikolayev. Even though in this way I would have hired a wagon to Kremintchoug more cheaply. But my mind was firm that I did not want Nikolayev and Odessa — only to return here to Tcheirin. And from here to travel home. Therefore I hired a wagon on the condition of returning to Tcheirin. And I hired the wagon the night belonging to Thursday — intending to travel the following morning after prayers — to come for Shabbas to Kremintchoug. And to return from there Monday after Shabbas.
