אַחַר כָּךְ סָמוּךְ לְפֶסַח סִפֵּר הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַנּוֹרָאָה שֶׁל הַשִּׁבְעָה בֶּעטְלֶערְס כַּנַּ"ל וְנִמְשָׁךְ הַסִּפּוּר בְּעֶרֶךְ שְׁנֵי שָׁבוּעוֹת כִּי תְּחִלַּת הַסִּפּוּר הָיָה בְּלֵיל שַׁבַּת קדֶשׁ כ"ה אֲדָר שְׁנַת תק"ע הַנַּ"ל וַאֲנִי לא הָיִיתִי אָז אֶצְלוֹ וְאָז סִפֵּר הַתְחָלַת הַמַּעֲשֶׂה מֵהַמֶּלֶךְ שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ בֵּן יָחִיד שֶׁרָצָה לִמְסֹר לוֹ הַמְּלוּכָה בְּחַיָּיו וְכוּ' עַד הַגְּמָר שֶׁל הַיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁמְּסַפֵּר מֵהַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל הָעִוֵּר שֶׁהִתְפָּאֵר בְּהַזִּכָּרוֹן שֶׁלּוֹ וְכוּ' עַיֵּן שָׁם וְלא יוֹתֵר וְאַחַר כָּךְ בַּשָּׁבוּעַ שֶׁאַחַר שַׁבָּת הַנַּ"ל בָּא רַבִּי נַפְתָּלִי לְבֵיתוֹ לִקְהִלַּת קדֶשׁ נֶעמִירוֹב וְסִפֵּר לִי כָּל הָעִנְיָן הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא הַזֶּה וְעָמַדְתִּי מַרְעִיד וּמִשְׁתּוֹמֵם כִּי אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁכְּבָר זָכִיתִי לִשְׁמעַ מִפִּיו הַקָּדוֹשׁ דְּבָרִים שֶׁלּא שְׁמָעַתָּן אזֶן מֵעוֹלָם, תּוֹרוֹת וּמַעֲשִׂיּוֹת נוֹרָאוֹת, אַךְ מַעֲשֶׂה כָּזאת עֲדַיִן לא שָׁמַעְתִּי
For all that I have written of what passed over me — such and similar things passed also over the other men of our circle. For the great majority of them had tremendous and awesome obstacles against drawing close to Rabbainu zichrono livracha — in particular at the beginning. And many fell and were distanced through the obstacles and lost what they lost. Woe for what is lost and cannot be recovered. And happy are those who remained — who prevailed and strengthened themselves and broke through all the obstacles and cleaved to Rabbainu zichrono livracha. And they merited for themselves and for their descendants and for all of Israel, forever and for eternity.
וַאֲנִי כְּבָר הָיִיתִי מוּכָן לִנְסֹעַ אֵלָיו זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה לְפה בְּרֶסְלַב, וְנָסַעְתִּי מִיָּד, וּבָאתִי לְפה אוֹר לְיוֹם רְבִיעִי סָמוּךְ לְראשׁ חֹדֶשׁ נִיסָן וּלְמָחֳרָתוֹ אַחַר הַתְּפִלָּה נִכְנַסְתִּי אֵלָיו זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה וְדִבַּרְתִּי עִמּוֹ הַרְבֵּה כְּדַרְכּוֹ תָּמִיד וְאַחַר כָּךְ דִּבַּרְתִּי עִמּוֹ מֵעִנְיַן הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַנּוֹרָאָה הַנַּ"ל שֶׁסִּפֵּר בְּלֵיל שַׁבַּת קדֶשׁ הֶעָבַר כְּפִי מַה שֶּׁשָּׁמַעְתִּי מֵרַבִּי נַפְתָּלִי וְתִקֵּן לִי כָּל הַדְּבָרִים בְּעִנְיַן הַזִּכָּרוֹן מַה שֶּׁהִתְפָּאֵר כָּל אֶחָד וְסִדֵּר לִי הַדְּבָרִים כְּסֵדֶר וְאָמַר לִי שֶׁכֵּן הָיָה בְּכָל יוֹם וָיוֹם מִשִּׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּשְׁתֶּה שֶׁבָּא בְּכָל יוֹם אֶחָד מֵהַשִּׁבְעָה בֶּעטְלֶערְס וְנָתַן לָהֶם מַתָּנָה לַדְּרָשָׁה וְכוּ' וְאָמַר שֶׁהוּא נִכְסָף מְאד לִשְׁמעַ הַגְּמָר דְּהַיְנוּ מַה שֶּׁהָיָה בְּכָל יוֹם מִשִּׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּשְׁתֶּה כִּי כֵּן הָיָה בְּכָל יוֹם שֶׁבָּא אֶחָד מֵהַשִּׁבְעָה בֶּעטְלֶערְס וְכוּ' כַּנַּ"ל וְגַם גְּמַר הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁהִתְחִיל מֵהַמֶּלֶךְ וְכוּ' הַנַּ"ל (כִּי כֵּן הָיָה דַּרְכּוֹ שֶׁהָיָה מְדַבֵּר שֶׁנִּכְסָף לִשְׁמעַ וְלֵידַע הָעִנְיָן שֶׁהוּא בְּעַצְמוֹ הָיָה צָרִיךְ לְגַלּוֹת) וְהָיִיתִי מְצַפֶּה שֶׁיְּסַפֵּר לְפָנַי הַגְּמָר הַנַּ"ל כִּי רָאִיתִי שֶׁרְצוֹנוֹ לְסַפֵּר אַךְ בְּתוֹךְ כָּךְ בָּא הַמְשָׁרֵת שֶׁלּוֹ וְאָמַר הִגִּיעַ הָעֵת שֶׁיּאכַל וְסִדֵּר שֻׁלְחָנוֹ וְנִפְטַרְנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ וְאַחַר כָּךְ יָשַׁן קְצָת
On Thursday — Erev Shavuos as mentioned — in the morning, I heard from his holy mouth a Torah teaching that was revealed to him there in Zaslov. And they also brought him new silver vessels from Teplik, and he took them and recited Shehecheyanu. Afterward, close to evening — at the time when they had already begun to gather to pray Mincha — his first wife zichronah livracha passed away. And Rabbainu zichrono livracha was standing at the time of the departure of her soul. And he told me afterward that when her soul departed at the moment he was standing there — and certainly he had great pain and confusion of mind [bilbul hamochin] according to his level — he nonetheless had to perform and to have the proper intentions for what was necessary for her good. And Hashem Blessed be He helped him greatly at that moment — that in the very midst of the pain and the confusion he acted and performed what was necessary for her benefit. And immediately when she passed away, the men of the holy chevra kadisha [burial society] of the holy community of Zaslov hurried themselves greatly and engaged in her burial immediately with wondrous alacrity. They did not at all begin to demand any payment for the burial from Rabbainu zichrono livracha — rather, they relied on him entirely: if he wished to give them something afterward, he could give, and they rushed and took her immediately and buried her with great speed. And this was arranged in such a way that there was time after her burial to observe mourning for a brief period — and that brief period counted for the seven days [shiva], as this law is well known. And this was a great good and salvation for us — for through this we merited to hear from his holy mouth wondrous Torah during this festival of Shavuos.
אַחַר כָּךְ חָזַרְתִּי וְנִכְנַסְתִּי אֶצְלוֹ וְחָזַרְתִּי וְדִבַּרְתִּי עִמּוֹ הַרְבֵּה, וְדִבֵּר עִמִּי הַרְבֵּה מֵעִנְיַן הַחֶסְרוֹנוֹת שֶׁכָּל הָעוֹלָם חָסֵר לָהֶם הַרְבֵּה, כִּי סִפַּרְתִּי לוֹ הַרְבֵּה דְּבָרִים מִבַּרְדִּיטְשׁוֹב מֵעִנְיַן הַנְּגִידִים הַגְּדוֹלִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ שָׁם שֶׁמְּלֵאִים דְּאָגוֹת וְיִסּוּרִים וְחֶסְרוֹנוֹת וְכוּ' וְאָז עָנִיתִי וְאָמַרְתִּי לְפָנָיו הַפָּסוּק (קהֶלֶת ג'), גַּם אֶת הָעוֹלָם נָתַן בְּלִבָּם מִבְּלִי אֲשֶׁר לא יִמְצָא הָאָדָם אֶת הַמַּעֲשֶׂה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הָאֱלֹקִים מֵראשׁ וְעַד סוֹף (שֶׁפֵּרֵשׁ רַשִּׁ"י שָׁם לְעִנְיַן חֶסְרוֹנוֹת וְכוּ') וְגָמַרְתִּי לְפָנָיו כָּל הַפָּסוּק כֻּלּוֹ וְתֵכֶף שֶׁגָּמַרְתִּי הַפָּסוּק עָנָה וְאָמַר הֲלא זֶה הוּא מַעֲשֶׂה שֶׁלָּנוּ וְשָׁאַל תֵּכֶף הֵיכָן אָנוּ עוֹמְדִים בְּהַמַּעֲשֶׂה, וְנִבְהַלְתִּי מְאד וְעָנִיתִי בְּבֶהָלָה בְּהַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל יוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי, עָנָה וְאָמַר בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי וְכוּ' וְסִפֵּר כָּל הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל יוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי שֶׁהוּא הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל הַחֵרֵשׁ וְכוּ' וְגָמַר הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל הַיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי וְלא סִפֵּר אָז יוֹתֵר וְהָיָה עוֹד אֵיזֶה אֲנָשִׁים מֵאַנְשֵׁי-שְׁלוֹמֵנוּ שֶׁזָּכוּ לִשְׁמעַ כָּל זֶה וּמִי שֶׁשָּׁמַע אֵלּוּ הַמַּעֲשִׂיּוֹת מִפִּיו הַקָּדוֹשׁ בְּוַדַּאי הָיָה רוֹאֶה נִפְלְאוֹת הַשֵּׁם בְּלִי שִׁעוּר וְגַם עַתָּה מִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לְהִסְתַּכֵּל בָּהֶם בְּעֵין הָאֱמֶת יָכוֹל לְהָבִין גְּדֻלַּת הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ וּגְדֻלַּת הַצַּדִּיקִים וּגְדֻלַּת הַתּוֹרָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה
And behold, at first they had given us a room in the beis midrash [study hall] to pray in. But after she passed away, Rabbainu zichrono livracha commanded that all of us pray in his house — in the place where she had passed away.
