בְּשָׁבוּעוֹת בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי שֶׁהוּא יוֹם חֲמִישִׁי לַשַּׁבָּת הָיְתָה הַשְּׂרֵפָה הַגְּדוֹלָה בִּקְהִלַּת-קדֶשׁ נֶעמִירוֹב וְנִשְׂרְפָה רב הָעִיר כְּכֻלָּהּ וְכַמָּה נְפָשׁוֹת, וְנִתְדַּלְדֵּל אָבִי נֵרוֹ יָאִיר מְאד מְאד, כִּי נִשְׂרַף בֵּיתוֹ וְהוֹנוֹ וּרְכוּשׁוֹ אַךְ בֵּיתִי שֶׁאֲנִי יָשַׁבְתִּי בּוֹ לא נִשְׂרַף גַּם הָאִישׁ שֶׁהָיָה חַיָּב לָנוּ הַמָּעוֹת שֶׁגָּבִינוּ מִמֶּנּוּ בְּעֶרֶב שָׁבוּעוֹת נִשְׂרַף אֶצְלוֹ גַּם כֵּן כָּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ וְאָז רָאִינוּ הַשְׁגָּחָתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ מַה שֶּׁחָמַל עָלֵינוּ וְשָׁלַח לָנוּ אֶת רַבִּי לֵיבּ הַנַּ"ל לִגְבּוֹת הַמָּעוֹת בְּעֶרֶב שָׁבוּעוֹת, כִּי אִם לא הָיָה בָּא אָז לְנָגְשֵׂנוּ הָיָה נֶאֱבָד הַמָּעוֹת בְּוַדַּאי אֵצֶל הָאִישׁ הַנִּזְכָּר לְעֵיל וְהָיְתָה מִתְבַּטֶּלֶת הַהַדְפָּסָה אָז וְהֶפְסֵד זֶה אֵין לְשַׁעֵר כוּ' אֲבָל הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ חִשֵּׁב מִקּדֶם וְשָׁלַח אֶת הָאִישׁ הַנַּ"ל לְנָגְשֵׂנוּ כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ נִדְפָּסִים הַסְּפָרִים הַקְּדוֹשִׁים שֶׁיִּהְיֶה נִשְׁאָר זִכְרָם לְדוֹרוֹת עוֹלָם לְזַכּוֹת אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל לָנֶצַח
At the last Rosh Hashana that was in Uman — which fell on Shabbas Kodesh — he became very weak on that day — on the first day of Rosh Hashana — Shabbas Kodesh. And much blood began to pour from his mouth — from the coughing. And he was very afraid when blood had come out through the cough — and in particular now when blood was flowing from him immeasurably. And he was very weak. And his custom had always been to say Torah on the first day of Rosh Hashana in the evening twilight of the second day. And already the entire crowd had gathered into the large room that had been prepared for him to say Torah in. And there was very great crowding — for there were hundreds of guests there beyond the townspeople. And all of them were standing and waiting for him to enter to say Torah. And their eyes were spent watching until evening — and still he had not entered — because of the severity of his weakness, which was so heavy that he almost expired.
