תּוֹרָה נ הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה בְּיַד הָאָדָם לְהַטּוֹתָהּ כִּרְצוֹנוֹ לְמָקוֹם שֶׁהוּא רוֹצֶה, וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיִּהְיוּ שְׁנֵי מַחֲשָׁבוֹת בְּיַחַד כְּלָל, וַאֲפִלּוּ אִם לִפְעָמִים מַחֲשַׁבְתּוֹ פּוֹרַחַת וּמְשׁוֹטֶטֶת בִּדְבָרִים אֲחֵרִים וְזָרִים, הִיא בְּיַד הָאָדָם לְהַטּוֹתָהּ בְּעַל כָּרְחָהּ אֶל הַדֶּרֶךְ הַיָּשָׁר לַחֲשֹׁב מַה שֶּׁרָאוּי, וְהוּא מַמָּשׁ כְּמוֹ סוּס שֶׁפּוֹנֶה מִן הַדֶּרֶךְ וְסָר לְדֶרֶךְ אַחֵר, שֶׁתּוֹפְסִין אוֹתוֹ בְּרִסְנוֹ וּמַחֲזִירִין אוֹתוֹ בְּעַל־כָּרְחוֹ אֶל הַדֶּרֶךְ הַיָּשָׁר, כְּמוֹ כֵן יְכוֹלִים לִתְפֹּס אֶת הַמַּחֲשָׁבָה בְּעַל־כָּרְחָהּ לַהֲשִׁיבָהּ אֶל הַדֶּרֶךְ הָרָאוּי:
The evil inclination knocks at a person each time and arouses one to what it arouses. And even if the person does not listen to it — even so it knocks again a second and third and fourth time and more. But if the person is strong in one's mind and does not turn to it at all — then the evil inclination departs and goes away. And likewise in prayer — thoughts come to confuse one's prayer many times. And if one is strong — not to look at them at all — they depart — as is explained elsewhere.
