And on Motza'ei Shabbas Kodesh — the night of the first of Shavuos — several people gathered at the house of our master of the house. And we were awake there together. For there was no study hall there — only synagogues. And in the synagogue people did not stay awake — only some of them gathered at the master of the house of ours. And we stayed awake there. And this was a great pleasure for us. And we said the entire Tikun and also the Idra Rabba. For there the night was very long at those times — close to twice the length of our night — for the night of Shavuos there was eight hours. But even so — we had no difficulty from the loss of sleep — for we sat there in great comfort on their mats. And every time they gave us coffee to drink. And near daybreak they gave to everyone good brandy with orange-peel preserves. And also near daylight — some Sephardic men began to play songs and praises — some known to us and some others — in their different tunes. And they also played Yah Ribbon Olam and so on — in their different tune and vowels. And even so — it was a very great pleasure for me. And I was playing along with them in their tune. And I greatly rejoiced — that in every place people were singing and praising His Great Name — Blessed be He and Blessed be His Name. Until the day shone. And then we went to immerse. And they all went to pray in the synagogue — for there everyone prayed early on Shavuos — even though most had not been awake all night. And we prayed at home. And after the prayer — we ate rice with milk and honey — for such was their custom to eat honey and milk on Shavuos.
